How can I tell if my car has a problem (lack of power)

Featured Replies

Hi

Excuse the silly title but I'm at a loss how to explain this.

So it feels to me like my car is missing a bit of oomph. I've read posts saying the 190 engine has a fair amount of torque and mine just don't feel all that brisk.

Today for example I was in 4th doing 40mph.put my foot down and not a lot happened so had to change down to 3rd.this was a flat peice of road.

The car drives OK. CN be a bit sluggish on pull away. But no smoke or horrible noises or anything.

It Could be my perception of it but it just don't feel as spritely as when I bought it.

It's just had a service and I asked the garage to look at it but they had no concerns. That should of put my mind at rest but I still can't help but think somthing is a miss.

Just wondered if anyone with this engine could comment. 2.0tdi 190 manual used in normal mode most of the time.

Thanks

Adrian.

Go for a test drive in a Superb with the same engine and drivetrain, pretend to be a prospective customer.

You'll soon know whether yours is right or not.

Interesting. Mine feels similar, though 190 TDI DSG rather than manual. I've put it down to one or a combination of the following:

- winter diesel (it isn't so good on MPG so I assume also not so good for performance,  though I have absolutely no evidence to back this up).

- non-premium diesel (last tank was non-premium due to lack of availability where I filled up).

- cold weather (counter-intuitive to me since my ICE studies suggest I should get better performance in the cold due to denser air, but apparently not so for modern turbo cars)

- impatience on my part. I really don't like driving in the dark and find myself pushing it to get where I am going. My fault and I force myself to take a deep breath and calm down.

All of the above may be complete nonsense, but you aren't the only one who feels their car is not performing as well as it did six months ago.

Perhaps a faulty sensor / blocked filter ?

Looking on-line accelerating hard between 40 and 60 mph should be about 3 and a bit seconds

Nobody can guess. Only a thorough OBD scan made by a good technician can reveal the cause.

Maybe I'll get it booked into an independent vag specialist. There is a couple round this way.probably not until after Christmas though. Skoda just don't seem to want to know.

Thanks for the replies.

Or... time a 30-70mph acceleration on a flat piece of road and compare it with similar cars? :tongueout:  Surely more fun than fiddling with diagnostics
