2.0 tsi vrs incorrect overheating indication

Featured Replies

My 2014  2.0 TSI vrs has a peculiar overheating issue. The temperature gauge moves up to just under 120 and the yellow engine management warning light comes on. However the gauge does not reach the red section even when continuing driving normally. Just prior to this a Skoda main dealer issued an ‘advisory’ that there was an unspecified cooling problem indicated by debris in coolant but didn’t identify a cause

I took the car to an independent who read 9 cooling system errors indicating a need to replace the auxiliary pump. This replacement cleared the errors but the gauge indicated high running temperature continued so the main cooling pump was replaced but no fault was found in old pump. The old coolant wasn’t heavily contaminated. The gauge continues to behave erratically rapidly fluctuating between 90 and 120 over a few seconds. The temperature of water in the reservoir has been measured at around 95 so I’m advised the engine probably isn’t overheating.

This appears to me to be a sensor or gauge problem - has anyone come across something similar and/or suggest which components need replacing

Do you have a silica bag in your expansion tank, and is it still intact?

I had an odd coolant problem last year which turned out to be quite expensive (2015 TSI vRS).  Symptom was erratic internal heating, but it took a long time to find the culprit.  Several items were replaced, but ultimately it was the coolant check valve was reporting open when it was closed.  It supplies coolant to the turbo.  Having been given the okay to take the car home, the turbo grenaded itself before I got home.  A cautionary tale that simple stuff can have expensive consequences.

Update - Skoda dealer has finally identified cause and fixed problem - a failing ‘coolant regulator’ (or thermostat) had sprayed coolant onto adjacent wiring which was all damaged and had to be replaced.

Thanks for coming back to update the thread.
