Market for used tyres?

I know there are recent recommendations regarding used tyres but I was wandering if there is a market for tyres to be used on a track or similar? I am about to replace 4 conti sport contact 5's as they are getting on and don't feel right especially in the wet. There is 7mm left on 2 and 3mm on the other pair. 

Short of putting them in the classifieds is there anywhere else I could pass them on for useful usage?

I'll sometimes buy a second hand tyre if it's in decent state and has a lot of tread left. I'd consider the 2 and 3mm are no use. If the 7mm were worn evenly, hadn't got any sidewall damage, or cracks when you flex the sidewall, I'd consider it as being worth about £10-20.

If the tyres aren't good enough for you, then frankly I don't want them - the pair on 3mm might be 2 x legal limit but only a fool - or a lease driver would/has to risk them (3+mm is my minimum). If the 7mm pair are frightening you - please don't sell (or pass) them on. Track use might work but if they are iffy just running around I don't think too many people would want them on a car piling into a hard braking turn...

Was thinking of £50 for the set and seeing where it got me.  They are currently still on the wheels hanging in the garage. Are you saying you'd be interested in the better pair or you have done similar in the past?

I might try Facebook market. Don't suppose you know if you still have to pay to dispose of tyres if the tyre place doesn't take them? Getting them swapped next weekend.

Just saying it's something I've done in the past. I'm good for tyres at the moment thanks, they'd be too big for my little fabia anyway.

@NJRJ you raise some very good points. I think I'll either find some other uses for them or let the garage take them away.

Not the 7mm ones but the 3mm ones with some further wear.

 

Racers pay a lot of money to have 6mm of tread buffed off of a new tyre before it even touches the road or track.

I ran selected part worns for over a decade during the hard times, my budget was £10, max £15-20 for a really good tyre as part of a matched set including fitting, if you are selling yours with the rims someone will have them but not otherwise.

why not try advertising on some car enthusiasts type forum where people with Skodas read adverts,  like on BRISKODA.

Someone near might just be after what you are offering for sale.

The places I use will only fit tyres they supply or tyres I supply brand new, with labels still on.  They're not about to take a risk fitting a tyre of unknown history on a wheel for it to come back on them.

That is the question.   You answer it by asking where you get your tyres.

 

There has always been the difference between Multi National Tyre & Exhaust Centres and Independent / Privately Owned type places.

Places with Rules that the management expect 'fitters' to stick to, or where the rules are broken, or where the staff know about tyres, inspecting them, discussing with the customer and then doing or not doing work.

 

There are establishments that fit 'Part Worn Tyres' and ones that fit new tyres you bring in that were bought online, or that change your tyres for you for change of season.

Lots might depend on where you are, urban areas or country areas, and the type of establishment.

Well you could argue that twice yearly garages around the country will be fitting part worn tyres to some extent; when people are taking in their seasonal tyres to be swapped out.  I've never heard of a single occasion where a garage has refused this. I've done it myself on several occasions, either full tyre/wheel setup or just the tyres.  I would surmise, from what I know of the fitters I've used is that they would quickly call out any issues with the tyres/wheels I'd provided and refuse to put them on.  I've had the speed rating of my Winter tyres questioned before and the boss told the fitter it's fine and it's usually the case with Winter tyres but apart from that nobody has ever questioned my request. 

I know plenty Fast of Foot Fitter centres that would not and will not fit tyres that they were not supplying.

 

Well maybe not when the 'more than my jobs worth manager or co-worker are about'.

 

Tyres fitted, balanced and fitted and no receipt, cash money in the tea box.

 

Days have changed now, 

tyres are arriving from various locations mail order into fitters, Asda Tyres, Black Circles , Mytyres, etc etc.

 

Fitting of used tyres is always going to be an issue that business's and their insurers need to have made rules on and if they and staff are taking responsibility.

Those that allow a blind eye to be turned are taking a big risk.

I've had many many tyres fitted that I've supplied and never had an issue, however they've always insisted they're new and have the stickers on so they can check them.

 

I've always assumed people who change per season have 2 sets of wheels.  Otherwise that's ~£60 twice a year just to get them swapped and balanced, which seems quite an expensive route.

That would be £60 at places that charge £15 for a tyre change and balance of each tyre.    Some can charge more like £25 to fit tyres and balance wheels.  Some, 'That will be a fiver each....'.

Maybe just changing tyres to different rims as you change cars and keep what tyres you have.

 

That £60 cost is with VAT.  That is fitted officially and through the books.

The places you say only fit New Tyres with labels on.

Where is it you go Kwikfit, ATS-Euromaster or similar?     

The point is that all Tyre & Exhaust centres are not the same as those National Type places.

I don't use the big national ones.

I use a couple of local ones and they're £10-£15 a go.

 

Last time I phoned around, they were by far the cheapest.  

Many of the garages seemed to charge £1 per inch of rim size plus £5-£10, which I thought  was very expensive at about £25 a go.  So, tbh I thought my £60 estimate was conservative if anything.

Everytime you by a used car you buy and run - or at least I do - used tyres of unknown origin and history.

 

I have bought used tyres - mainly winter tyres where the tread is about 7mm and have done one or two seasons. When the tyres are down to 4mm I sell them on. The buyers inspect them and buy if happy.

We have a few tyre places which will happily and properly fit tyres I supply with VAT and receipt.

Had no choice but to do it for more than a decade, I got far more mileage out of tyres with 4mm tread than people get buying new and replacing at 3 or 4mm. If you can get to 4mm without uneven wear you have a lot more life left in your tyres than you have already had out of them.

 

All too easy to turn new tyres into illegal ones by ragging them when the tread blocks are tall or from out of spec wheel alignment & steering/suspension angles, far harder with part worns.

 

And that is the difficulty when choosing part worns, to find a matching set where all have even wear across the width, I usually ended up with 2 pairs of differing tyres for each axle.
