Hi all, this is my first post in this forum. I own a Skoda Fabia mk2  1.4 tdi with 100000km (60000miles) resently when i got my car washed when i noticed a leak near the drive shaft and gearbox housing. I found out the gearbox shaft oil seal is on its way out. So i want to tackle this job as a diy as i dont trust any mechanics or garages near me. The only problem that i have is I'm unable to find the part number for the seal, since in India it's very difficult to get the spares for skodas i would like to know the part number for the outer gearbox oil seal so that i can buy it before i start the job as i dont want to get stranded after removing the seal since this is my sole ride😅.

 The car is bnm engine 2010 model year with lvf gearbox

How much is it leaking? It's fairly normal to see a certain amount of leakage there. Certainly not worth bothering with unless it's dripping onto the road/driveway.

You should really replace the driveshaft bolts and make sure they are tightened to the correct specification when fitting new ones, item 3 here https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fabi/2010-706/4/407-407022/

There's also a special grease you're supposed to use on the seal, this stuff I think: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/radial-shaft-sealing-grease/g052128a1/

Not sure what happens if you don't use it, or use some other grease.

Thanks for the early reply. I will get a look at it, I'm just worried since i had a catastrophic gearbox failure at 95000 km and had to rebuild the whole unit and it wasn't cheap. 

Which part failed? 

The 2 bearing mounted on a plate part no 02T 311 206E

Wow, big failure! I changed a gearbox on my partner's Fabia (2005) for noise coming from that bearing pair (I think, still haven't stripped the old box to find out).

This was at about 165k miles, so it had lived a bit.

 

Here in India the authorised and local service is very dodgy. They try to rip us of if we don't have any knowledge on the car. My friends rapid just done 50000km is consuming a lot of oil and the service center says it's common to consume close to 2 litres of oil every 10 to 15 thousand km.
