Upgrade recimmendation requested: RNS510.

Featured Replies

Looking to upgrade my old swing radio in my mk 2 (2010) fabia.

Can anyone recommend where / from who I can get a Skoda RNS510 with code (plus, presumably, the GPS module and whatever other needed essentials), please?

Am scouring the web / facebook but apart from a few people asking for silly money,  have not had much luck... I'd go about 250 or so.

The RNS510/Columbus is a very old and outdated unit now.

You'd be far better off fitting an aftermarket unit.

Thanks softscoop.  Having perused the various radio/satnav threads, there seems to be multiple opinions on the aftermarket low end  vs older original items? I've seen a number of threads where the quality of sound/display/signal etc was not highly rated in models like xtrons etc, and then one or two threads that rate them ok?

For a Newby like me, it becomes more than a little baffling to tell what aftermarket unit would be best, what other bits I would need to buy, what software I would need to code it etc etc.

With that in mind I thought a relatively 'plug and play' original purpose built option (albeit older) which gives me reasonable quality and reliable dab +, Bluetooth and  satnav (and if I'm lucky maybe reverse camera in addition to my beep sensors and perhaps carplay) would be ideal bang for buck, with a price cap for an old rattletrap like mine of about 250 - 300.

Have you upgraded to any low-midrange aftermarket options yourself?

from personal experience I would avoid the RNS510 as it does not work well / intergrate with the Fabia audio setup ( and I spent LOTS of time trying all the diff settings in VCDS)

however the RNS 315 although not as "trick" sounds far superior to the point I downgraded again from a 510......and although it may be an "older" unit as well, it works very well imo.  The phone / bluethooth / DAB etc is also faultless.

I think you would need to spend significantly more to get an aftermarket unit to perform anything like the factory units do.

make sure if your looking for bluetooth and DAB that the unit has it, there is many with both, either or neither, To confirm bluetooth is present you need to see the label and the MAC address populated (attached image), if its all 0's then no bluetooth.

DAB is an addtional Fakra connector (black usuually) up in top left area on the back of the unit (arrowed attached image)..............So moral is, don't just buy a RNS315 hoping for all the bits because lots don't have any of them.

That's exceedingly helpful actually.  I knew about the mac address but not the fakra connector.

Don't think my fabia has a gps or bluetooth aerial.  It just has the  quad lock connector and a connector for that dual plug.  Am guessing I'll need to install those components too- people don't usually provide them with the head unit do they?

This is going to be a laugh! Looking forward to fitting it.  😀

this is all you need for GPS, and you can hide it within the dash as per the Skoda accessory fitting guide because the RNS315 was available as retrofit kit.

Bluetooth is in the headunit (if mac address is populated) nothing more needed for that as for GSM to.

The DAB is the one you will need, option to fit aftermarket aerial, or factory shark fin on the roof, will be similar ones as per the GPS linked above.
