Auto wipers not working?

Featured Replies

Before phoning the dealer I thought I'd check here 1st. 1 week old 1.5 man SE drive.

Both auto wiper options ticked in settings, manual controls in off/neutral position, nothing happens when it rains. All wiper functions are fine with manual selection.

Am I missing something or do I need a technician to have a look?

The wiper stalk has to be in the first up from off position for auto wipers and the sensitivity can be adjusted with lever on top of stalk, all of which is covered in the owners manual.

I thought that was the position for intermittent windscreen wiping and the sensitivity increases or decreases the time between wipes?

I'm expecting wipers to operate when rain is sensed by the car?

Thanks for answering.

When you have auto wipers you don't have timed intermittent, you have automatic rain sensed "intermittent".

For the wipers to operate when rain is sensed you MUST have the wiper switch in the intermittent position. Off means OFF!

D'oh!

That makes sense, thanks for your answers guys. I was getting a bit confused dipping in and out of the manual trying to get used to all the bells and whistles. Way more tech than my 67 plate focus estate had.

You need an off position. If you didn't on a frosty morning the wipers would try to clear the ice ripping the blades to shreds.

If it is frosty make sure the wipers are off before switching on the ignition to start and de-ice.

If the wipers are in ‘auto’ mode they don’t wipe when the car is initially turned on for the exact reason you’ve stated. They only start working once in motion.

Not on my 16 plate car.

Hmm. Odd. My 14 plate did. Wonder if you have a wee issue there.

Are the auto wipers an option?  On a used facelift SE I looked at, it only had intermittent wipe.

I'll add that if you need them to work whilst stationary, just cycle wiper stalk off/on to the AUTO position agian.

Yes on most models they are an option.

It rained all day, I drove around in it with a big grin on my face.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated everyone.

Obviously a bonus of the SE Technology then.

I really don't get why it doesn't just say auto on the stalk like any other car.

Because they use the same stalk for cars with and without auto wipers.

If your wipers are starting as soon as you start the engine (with the stalk in the auto position), then you have a fault.

Then they're incredibly lazy.

I presumed I didn't have auto wipers for weeks after getting my car, then realised they had come on automatically after I'd left them on intermittent last time I drove it.

I still find them annoying though, I just leave them on auto all the time, but they don't wipe the screen when I start the car and it's got the nights rain water sat on it.  I have to turn them off and on again.

Or, this week I found it sets them off of I scrape the windscreen over the sensor.

Skoda is a budget brand, it's not about laziness it's about cost saving B)

I actually like the way this sort of thing is implemented to keep the look feel of the car the same across models but some have added features.

Fwiw I have never noticed mine wipe when first starting the car. But then I don't scrape as I have a heated screen.
