Superb mkIII 2.0 4x4 DSG 272ps coolant loss

Featured Replies

Hello was wondering if anyone else has had coolant loss on there cars mine is not even a year old yet and I got a low coolant warning light witch I think is a bit strange for a car that’s just done over 10k miles

TIA

I had to top up my coolant in the first year (8K miles). I didn't get a warning light, just popped the bonnet and noticed that the level was low. Topped it up to the max line and not had to worry about it for the past two years.

Do you think it is worth getting it done at Skoda don’t want them to hit me with warranty crap if something goes wrong with it

It's very easy to do it yourself, but do what you're comfortable with.

When the engine is cool, unscrew the filler cap and top the fluid up to the max line. The manual will tell you which coolant to buy.

You're more likely to run into "warranty crap" if you turn up with the coolant below the minimum line and an overheating engine.

Just don’t want to find out I have a leak somewhere and Skoda say you should have into the garage

Don't worry. Topping up is an owner task not a tech task.

My 280 has now done 43,000 miles and the coolant has never needed to be topped up. So I think you should keep an eye on it and if the level starts to fall after you’ve topped it up, go see a dealer. Modern cars shouldn’t ever need the coolant topping up, or only after a very large mileage.

This was/is one of the most common issues in the Golf GTI/R that share the same engine as the Superb 280. Frequent coolant loss, (like, low coolant message every 6 months) and is usually covered under warranty by replacing the water pump. I actually had this happen on my previous car which had the same engine (pre GPF version though). I was getting low coolant errors every 6 months after the 1st year. First two times dealer topped it up for me, but 3rd time within 13 months I said this is not normal and so they checked it and authorized a repair under warranty.

I'd imagine the 272 being a 2019 car comes with the revised pump so hopefully this is a one off and not a real issue. BUT, since there's a history with this, I'd suggest taking it to Skoda like you don't have a clue of what's going on and asking them to document it and top up for you. It's a new car anyway, such things should be done for free from the dealership. Even if they are that cheap and un-professional to ask a recent customer to do this themselves on a new car, you'll have evidence with them that there was coolant loss now and if, knock wood, the issue comes back it will be easy to claim a repair under warranty. If level stays the same for like another year you probably have nothing to worry about.

And now I'm going off to check coolant level on my 272, never did so these 10 months that I have it...

Same issue here...

Hi,

I had exactly the same issue with my superb mk3 (tdi 150ps 2wd).

At around 12000 kms, at the end of a long and cold journey, I had the warning light on the dashboard and message on the screen.

I popped up the bonnet and the coolant level was way below the minimum, nearly invisible.

The dealer came, put the car on a truck, and back to the garage. They did not find any leak (they pressure tested the circuit). They just topped up the coolant and told me the coolant circuit is so complex that a bubble can make its way out thousands of kms after the factory.

Did not really trust that, checked regularly, nothing ever happened. I have now 64.000 kms.

My experiences confirm the things being said here, for what it's worth.

When  collected my 6-month old car from Arnold Clark  three years ago, I checked pressures, fluid levels and so on when I got it home and found the coolant level was below the minimum mark on the reservoir. I topped it up, and mentioned it the next time I was in, to be told that cars often leave the factory with an air pocket in the system which can take some time to work it's way out and show as a drop in level. I was somewhat dubious, but since found the same story mentioned on this forum and, right enough, haven't had to top it up again since.

Come the end of November 2019 it was time for another service. Coolant level fine before we left, car dropped off at the garage and off we go to the hotel for a couple of days while they see to it. The next day I get a phone call to say the service was done, but there was a coolant leak from the thermostat. This required a replacement thermostat, which sounds cheap and easy except that the thermostat is an integral part of a housing which costs, along with a water pump, about £300 plus four hours labour. This was on top of £600 or so for the engine and DSG services, so quite a shock!

The guy did say that they'd had quite a few cars with this engine needing this work, but that none had come back with further issues, so fingers crossed!

I can only assume that the leak developed on my way to the garage. It's 172 miles from home. Don't ask - my wife can't quite decide whether I'm wise or stupid..... I don't need anyone else's opinion on that subject, before you start.
