Occy mpg

Featured Replies

Seriously considering changing from a 2013 1.6 Greenline Superb which gives a true 54mpg average (65mpg on a long run) but asking around Octavias seem to get a lot less mpg, is this the case?

cheers

That’s exelent mpg 2.0 defently won’t get that anyway . But recon 1.6 Octavia will get about the same on long runs mpg does drop off during the regen s these happen often some times every 250 miles or so

If you can get an Octy with the same engine and transmission I'd expect  you to get slightly (55 to 56mpg true)  fuel consumption because the mass and cdA would be better. You'd not save enough in running costs to pay for the change in 6 years though.

sadly its my council insisting I change for a Euro 6 by april 2022, my 2013 will be over the 7 year maximum age limit by March though ive managed to age exemot it till next december with £275 worth of paintwork

I have a school run till july 2022

the euro 6 occy/superb on offer (2016 at least) are getting cheaper slowly

Many of the same engines are used in Superb and Octavia and where this is the case you would expect similar or slightly better consumption from the lighter and smaller Octavia.

Consumption threads suggest generally similar real world results but the very best consumption claims (verified with refill figures) are usually from Superb owners.

The only logical answer is that Superb owners are superb drivers :) ...or the Superb actually has better real world aerodynamics despite slighty greater frontal and surface area. I am inclined to the first factor.

The MPG figures listed for my VRS TDI are laughable, but I didn't buy the car for that purpose. The specs reckon it's 53 urban, 68 extra urban and 62 combined. Never had those figures as long as I've a hole in my.......... polo.

At the moment I'm averaging 43 mpg (and my average figures have been calibrated) and that's with a bit of motorways and town. A longer trip on the motorway and I'll see close to 50 mpg. You'd think towing my bike trailer would drop the mpg (extra weight and drag), but cruising at 60mph brings back around 60 mpg.

Not sure where you've sourced your figures from - I can only guess you're not comparing like-4-like. EU6 tdi's have extra tech on board to meet emission legislation therefore doesn't matter what manufacturer you choose, the more modern deisel is not near as fuel efficient as an older one. According to HJ real MPG, owners report your car returning 56mpg on average - the same engine in the Octavia of that period returned just over 61mpg so contrary to what you've been told, it seems the Octavia is more fuel efficient.

If I'm reading the specs correctly, a 1.6tdi SE Greenline was available in the later model Superb up until Dec 2018, an engine which was EU6 compliant. Owners report it averaging 52mpg.  However a EU6 1.6tdi (115) was / may still be available in the Octavia and owners report that returning 57mpg. So again, the Octavia is more fuel efficient than the Superb. Of course given the size / weight of the Superb, we shouldn't need to check stats or ask questions - all things equal it's plainly obvious the lighter Octavia will be more fuel efficient.

The equa index (Google it) is a good place to go to for for as close to real world comparisons as you're likely to get. I found it useful.

I avg around 50mpg tank to tank on my 184 Manual VRS TDI 64 reg with nearly 70k on the clock.  When I first got it last year I was getting around 42mpg.  Fuel filter and additives have transformed the MPG and the smoothness of the engine.  On a boring 50mph average speed run (of which there are many around the West Mids on M6 whichever way you go!) I can get 62mpg very easily.

My DSG VRS TDI gets around 56 mpg on a long run. The fuel filter has been changed last year as well and I only run mine on Shell V power. Not that it has any increase in power but purely for the cleaners and additives it has. Helps keep the engine nice and clean. Around town I get about 47mpg, which is good considering I was getting 35 to 40mpg in my last car round town

My son has recently got a 2016 1.2 tsi Octavia which usually does just shy of 50mpg on a long run  (Yorkshire to Gloucestershire)

My 1.4TSi DSG Octy gets the following:

Stop-start town driving 35-40 MPG

Long runs e.g. Southampton to Gatwick and back 45-50+ MPG (cruise control set to 74 MPH indicated 70 MPH actual)

My old Oct 3 Scout was no where near as economical as my Oct 2 Scout - both manual diesels.  The DPF regens on my Oct 3 used to shave about 8mpg off (based on same commute, same time of day, same speeds, only ever used Std Shell Diesel and seeing mpg vary from 47mpg to 55mpg).

My 1.5TSi regularly sees 50mpg+ on the 12 mile commute to and from work. Even with heavy traffic, I don't recall having seen less than 40mpg.

That is what I would expect to hear reported.

Manual or DSG? How many miles has the car done and have you confirmed the display accuracy when refilling?

Manual MY18 SE model with around 18K on the clock now. I've not confirmed the accuracy unfortunately as I only refuel every 3-4 weeks now so generally forget ....

Best I've managed on the commute was around 69.7 mpg although it was around 72mpg before I got stuck in a minor bit of traffic .....

I expected you to say manual transmission :)

I used to religiously record all refills online but the wife drives most of the time and the reporting got compromised so I just check when I refill.

You must have beneficial conditions and good technique to get those figures but at least it shows what can be achieved with this engine.

Indeed - I normally clock up a good MPG on the way in to work before I hit the "idiot" traffic - sometimes you just have to floor it off the lights .......
