MPG for vRS in here please

Featured Replies

Average over the last 5000 miles or so has been 47.4 according to the trip. I find trip and manually calculated always tie up give or take 0.1mpg.

That's certainly not my experience.

I've found the computer to be consistently showing a more economical result that calculated reality.

The average error is 2.7mpg - and ranges from 1.5 to 4.6 (with one rogue result lower but still over at 0.5)

That's taken over 53 tank top-ups for 20,000 miles motoring.

Average actual consumption is 50.3mpg

The overreading was reported as a warranty issue but I was advised it couldn't be rectified.

Per tank...averages

Winter 46-50mpg

Summer 50-54mpg

My car doesn't exhibit any detectable seasonal variation...

13,000 miles done now, usually about 52 mpg. Best ever was when my Dad (who is very slow) got 60mpg on a long trip to Southend, went to Skeggy and got 58mpg once.

Lowest about 45mpg when driving around town.

38.5 mpg on a daily commute in standing traffic. Average of 16 mph. Average journey time of 40 minutes

so this is on the trip computer for the journey, not the overall MPG? if that's the case i can easily get 55mpg on the way to work, but the overall MPG is still 43mpg.

on the trip computer recently, I avergaed 59.2 a few weeks back on a long run....combined figure overall is currently 49 dead. Normal driving around the city and to work, I get about 46'ish.

I do 100 miles round trip to work mostly A-road and M-Way. As a result my mpg (on the computer) is consistently high - even if I drive really hard I manage high 40s. Average for my daily run is 52-53 on the computer. Current mileage is just over 20K.

Highest ever was 65 from Bournemouth to Leicester (tucked in behind wagons most of the way). God it was boring!

Interestingly, our 130 Superb at work always returns better mpg than the Furby, during normal driving it's almost always over 50 and on a long run I've seen 65 without a great deal of effort.

bloody hell, cheers for the replies!!!

seems im not the only one geting 40odd. just worried me that when i boot it or drive oap style i cant really get it higher which makes oap driving pointless!

what does the wee thing in the filler do that hisses? i knocked by accident earlier with the diesel pump and it hssed. what is its reason for being there??

just done 470 miles mixed driving on mways dual carriages etc avg 61mph and 57 mpg:) and its only done 1700 miles from new..still a bit tight

The fuel system includes an expansion tank, to accommodate fuel that has expanded through being heated (either on a hot day or by being circulated round the engine and back). The little button in the filler neck lets air out of the top of the expansion tank, and hence lets fuel into the bottom of the expansion tank. It can be used to increase the effective capacity of the fuel system (some have claimed up to 55 litres in a system that is nominally 45 litres) but at the risk of fuel spillage if a full tank does get warmed.

Remember the on-board computer is NOT accurate - the only way to record MPG accurately is to log distance and fuel (always assuming the odometer is better in accuracy terms...).

Hi DRG

It may depend on model year or individual cars sensors etc. I just cheked my last two full tanks against the trip and recorded error to be only in rounding up / down. So 46.9 on the trip was 46.866 actual. Close enough for me. Of course if the trip mileage is out, then the error will be undetectable without independent distance measuring gear.

2005 55 plate vRS on 10K miles.

According to the Skoda computer...

Last 1600 miles or so it's averaged over 46mpg.

Last big run I did (140 miles back from Wales) averaged 49.2 mpg.

If I keep the speedo on around 65-70mph and don't accelerate quickly, then I get indicated 60+ mpg on cruise. Obviously I have to stop/start/accelerate eventually but my record for a journey is around 55mpg.

sweet, but i have had mine down to 20 miles to go on the computer (looked like fumes on the fuel guage) and after 2 clicks on the pump i stil only got 39 litres in. are the phase 2 fabias smaller tanks? surely not? je suis confuzzled

I was getting fantastic mpg out of my vrs. Usually 52-60 mpg average which usually included one 'blast' per journey and on one 75 motorway mile journey saw 75mpg average (was driving like a grandad at 60 mph the whole way - interesting thing here is had the journey been longer at that mph the mpg would have kept creeping up and up!).

I would try driving with the trip computer on mpg current (the constantly altering one) to see how you right foot affects it (but keep eyes on road too!). If you are in traffic and cannot overtake there is no point in constantly being on and off the throttle and running up behind the car in front - try using very light throttle that car doesn't need heavy throttle applications. Remember in traffic that every start from a complete standstill is destroying your mpg average (imagine what the car is like to push in gear by hand from a standstill!). Try and drive as smoothly between the gears as possible too letting clutch up gently. Also coasting out of gear often consumes more fuel than coasting in gear. When you get some open road then enjoy the performance. Last few miles of each journey let the car warm down by driving gently - similarly let it warm up gradually and don't boot it until up to temp.

I'm sure you can get better mpg out of that car!

Mr Cruise is club footed - you can easily get 3mpg or so better than he does by driving yourself.

I get 58 average out of my 110TDi Octy so the PD should do better than that.

I found i was down to 47-49 and then changed the air filter early as the 40k limit seemed a bit high. What a joy, back up to high 50's again :)

I get 44-46 mpg average with mixed driving. On a run I can get 50+.

I drove like a nanny to get the mpg up at the beginning of ownership but I ended up not really enjoying the car, so I don't look at the ave. until I fill up at which point I reset the computer on setting 2.

Probably the reason why it's gone down and the remap also encourages you to drive faster.....;)

My Fabia is a few hundred away from it's first 10k service.

I'm averaging around 42mpg. I've got a 26 mile dash to and from work. Best I've seen his 50mpg. Worst 37mpg.

Went down to Newquay on the BH weekend, from Hertfordshire. Drove overnight on Thursday and was getting 40mpg. Monday lunchtime drive back got 55mpg. 400 miles each way. The way it gets driven, a 42mpg is quite respectable, I think. A petrol 130bhp/230lb.ft engine would get a lot less.

Can't quite match some of the claims of mpg I read in the press before buying the car though.

Might have a slightly heavier right foot...

Also coasting out of gear often consumes more fuel than coasting in gear.

Correct

Jeremy Clarkson did a review of a 4.0 TDi Audi A6/A8 from London to Scotland and back again on 1 tank and he said it's a misconception that putting a car in neutral and coasting is actually more efficient than leaving it in gear and just not using the accelerator, when infact the opposite is true.

How does that work then?

Surely if you are going down hill in gear there is engine braking slowing you down and so the engine would be doing some work.

If you leave it in gear and use no throttle then the fuel is cut off as its not needed as the momentum of the car keep the engine turing over. If you put it in neutral then the engine will idle so it'll need fuel or it'll stall. ;)

According to the trip computer I'm getting 57 mpg. According to me, using odometer readings and amount of fuel added, its actually 47 mpg.

2000 miles, spirited driving, usually 30 min trips at a time, countryside driving, mostly.

i posted somewhere else about some of my figures, so i will refresh

trip computer - 80mpg driving like a grany 12 mile journey 1/2 bypass other 1/2 normal roads

usually when driving to my girlfriends house 63ish mpg (about 60 mile trip most on motorway cruise set at about 68mph)

today, from wrexham to manchester following my dad at 60mph all the way - 69mpg!

car has about 1700 miles on now
