Slippery When Wet

Featured Replies

Happy New Year.

As the non snowy winter in NE Derbyshire rolls on, I notice that I'm more easily getting unwanted wheel spin with my Vredestein Quatrac 5, when pulling out and turning on to the local main road. Even on eco mode.

I guess the damp salty surface is to partly blame.

The layer of salt on the roads reduces the coefficient of friction even when dry, hence more wheelspin.

It is brine when liquid. It goes down as a solid.  (In the UK, elsewhere it is put down as liquids.)

Junctions might well have diesel and other crap on them as well including chuckies.

Lots of detergents might get put down at T Junctions and Crossroads, drivers waiting to go use windscreen / rear screen and head light washers.

The All seasons are not going to be spinning anymore in the same conditions if damp and treated and the same location than if the summers were on.

It is nice where there are road sensors and you know what is happening with the road sensors.

The cars 'Temperature Indicators are not reading Ground / Road temps.

The differential will let one wheel slip if you have any lock on, you could always launch straight ahead then turn 😁

& nip the brakes and even cut power.  1.4TSI / DSG's spin tyres just for for the fun from junctions...

Which is why putting TC off is so good and even disabling XDS or XDS +.   Go driver input.

I just want to turn right, out of my estate road on to a busy 30mph road some people still behave as if it was still 40mph. Only put lock on about half way across. Using second gear, which gives plenty of leeway if a speeder tries to tailgate. Some white lines in a hatched area. I do back off the loud pedal when I can.

Not had any wheelspin on my summer Bridgestone tyres but 4WD means wet or salty roads makes no difference to grip levels. Could get more wheelspin in our old 2009 Kia Picanto 1.1 litre.

FTFY 😉

SWMBO Picanto3 1.25l does not get wheel spin on its summer tyres doing the same manoeuvre. I put this down to much lower torque and power than my 1.4tsi. 😎

Depends how slowly you want to pull away.

I have a similar issue with the Swift at the moment on certain junctions needing tighter lock but also a bit of a quicker move...   I put it down to the hybrid support kicking in with the ICE engine  and eco Bridgestones...

I was going to replace them with Quatracs but your comments may make me think twice...

To add a contrasting view on the Quatracs; I've had them on both a FWD and AWD Superb 3's and have used them across a range of conditions/roads/temperatures, including snow and they've behaved impeccably.

The Quatrac5 are good tyres and I recommend them thoroughly. Indeed a friend and my BIL have fitted them on my recommendation. Please don't be put off by my very individual query.
