Over the last few weeks I have re-read loads of the old posts on this forum from 2012 to the present

I had one of the first Toledos with the 86 BHP 1.2 TSI Engine and now have one of the last with the

1.0 TSI Engine with a Rapid in between. Who else has stayed loyal to the Rapid/Toledo over it's lifespan and what are your thoughts

on its development, performance , demise and all other aspects of the models?

Had Toledo's since 2014 and I've driven older ones too. Cheap transport for 4, bit narrow for 5. Not dynamic to drive at all but does the job. Always better equipped for the price than a Rapid. Perceived quality improved year on year especially the ride and steering, and reduction in the creaks and leaks. Currently driving a MY18 and it's really well built and the interior quality to me seems a lot better than the pre 2015s. Although the 1.2 105 was lovely, I expect the newer 1.2 16V was better overall, coming without the widespread camchain or turbo issues, although I just didn't find it as nice to drive. Speaking of which, I have never gelled with the 1.0, and VWs reasons for replacing the 1.2 with it were clearly completely at odds with my needs. I think the 1.4 was what I really wanted,(plus sports suspension too) but SEAT dropped it years ago, and in a Skoda it cost too much. 

 

I expect we'll run ours into the ground though now. It was bought cash, and now we're on a pension with no real reason to change it, I see it on our driveway for 10 years or more. It's better looking than the Scala too.

I've had mine well over 5 years and TBH it's done it's job admirably. It's the only SEAT I've ever owned and love it for it's capacious load area with the seats folded. Passengers love the legroom in the rear and  it's got decent fuel economy.

As above really I can see me keeping it a while yet, I have thought about a change but TBH with what, it beats most in it's class for value for money and still looks pretty modern with all the current SEAT range.

Yes I also think that the 16v 1,2 was the best all rounder of the petrol engines. The 1.0 while still being an excellent engine comes a close but definate second. Having said that the 1.0 3 cylinder has a lot of character is probably the liveliest and makes a wonderful noise to my ears. Having had both models I think that the Toledo has the edge on the Rapid for beauty, Little touches in the Rapid I miss though ( the rubber strap for closing the boot; Fuel flap icescraper). Some months ago I went to Cosford Air Museum and bought a parking ticket which I slapped on the Toledos' dashboard . The ticket then proceeded to slide and disappear behind the dashboard. This would not have happened in the Rapid with its windscreen parking ticket holder. I also liked the inner door handles which have a 90 degrees kink in them on the Rapid rather than the straight ones on the Toledo with which I have managed to pinch my flesh with on occasions. The Toledo's Alcantara upholstery adds a touch of class and it is generally quieter than the Rapid. Buying new the Toledo was always better value than the Rapid. Between Rapid/Toledos I had a Superb L&K with the 280 PS Engine. It had every luxury you could think of and brethtaking performance. The Superb was ,well, superb but I ditched it after 18 months and came back to a Toledo which overall for my purposes is the better car.

I considered the later Toledo with the 1.0 engine, pretty good pre reg prices offered last year at the end of production too. What stopped me was the engine size.  I had experienced a 3 pot engine in the Citigo previous to the Toledo, maybe no where near the same engine??? but that car ran out of puff on moderate inclines so put me off it. The Citigo was a brilliant car too, a nice little package but mile for mile the Toledo with It's larger size and 1.2 engine isn't that much more expensive to run and a £30 VED too.

I think the Citygo 1 litre is non turbo and hence bares no comparison

to the 1.0 turbo in the Toledo. As I said though the engine you have got is probably the pick of the bunch so stick with it and enjoy!

The Citigo did have a turbo, I had the 75psi so the higher powered model. It was a little slow off the mark (the Toledo can be too) until the turbo kicked in.

When I say run out of puff, I do the same journey in the Toledo as I did in the Citigo, one part of the journey with a steep ish incline saw me down to 2nd gear in the Citigo whereas in the Toledo I just drop down to 4th. Of course that wasn't the sole reason it went, I needed a back seat to take 3 again, Citigo only seats 2  back there.

Apart from that it was a brilliant car and cruised all day at 70 easily on the motorways etc.

On my 2nd Rapid, currently leasing an Volvo S60 but I still have the Rapid and plan to go back to it.

 

Cheap to run, insure, maintain, big boot, good space inside, handles like a go-kart, good on fuel... It's a great little car.

I'd only dispute the handling out of those points.

 

Both of mine on 17 inch wheels have handled like a soggy blancmange from new. Through bumpy S bends the lack of damping control and amount of obvious flex in the body reminds me of a few convertibles I've tried.  It's just not fun in corners, and sadly with the 1.0 I don't find it fun on straights any more either. Still, we pensioners don't necessarily need our cars to be fun, just functional.

You need an MX-5 in your life, a pensioners play thing.🙄 I wouldn't push my Toledo in the twisty bits, not on the horrible Bridgestones. I can't seem to wear them out. They'll have to go either with the car this year (if I change it) or fit fresh if I keep.

I'd love one.  

 

But a winter home in a warm climate is my chosen retirement treat, and that wont leave anything for cars.

Citigo 1.0l is n/a (no turbo) 75ps or 59ps both the same no turbo

And now there's an 80ps one which is awful. Too slow for A/B road overtaking in the new Ibiza without causing brown trousers.

I had a seat mii courtesy car with the 1.0l 3 cylinder was the 75ps, strange wee engine, revs its nuts off and takes forever to get up the rev range and sounds like a jumbo jet. Was quite “nippy” in 1st and 2nd but time it was in 3rd had nothing really to give

You may have got a turkey - even my 2014 Rapid notchback handled well. It if had handled like a bed then  would never have bought it. The handling is fantastic despite the slippy Bridgestone tyres.

 

The lack of turbo in 1st was what put me off the 1.2 I had previously - it was always brown trousers time at busy roundabouts. Although it's not something I do very often, my 1.0 is quick off the mark at the lights.

 

In between my 2 Rapids I had a Scirocco R which was ridiculous but no fun to drive as it would do anything you asked of it.

 

I plan on keeping mine until it's 10 years old at least

Must have had 2 turkeys then from MY14 and MY18. Pedestrian handling and jiggly ride on both over 45000 miles. Both were comprehensively  beaten for both handling and ride by our very basic 2015 Ibiza, which was a most enjoyable drive despite its dire old 85PS engine.

I plan on keeping the Rapido for 10 years plus regardless, being a pensioner and happy with its running costs for sure.
