Squeaky rear brakes

Featured Replies

Hmmm

OK... I picked up a load of timber at lunchtime, someone in Exeter was giving away, so I got a sheet out and covered up the boot/ folded seats. As the amp/sub was covered up I figured I'd keep the radio off. Then, as I was driving slowly later on, I had the window partially open and I could hear a good squeak coming from the car, a rhythmical one. Upon sticking my head out of the car, doing 10mph, I could tell it was coming from the back (the "dodgy" discs area)

The best solution is probably to show big_k & others at Duxford, but I'm fearing this is the first sign I need new discs & pads on the back. :( If everyone at Duxford agrees, I'm going to have to hunt around for some new ones I reckon. Does anyone reckon I could buy (materials cost only) a pair of rear pads & discs for under

Jason,

What mileage have you done?

If it's less than 60k then I would doubt you'd need new pads and I'd be amazed if you need disks! The fronts do all the hard work so the chances are the rears are just clagged up with dust and muck, which is causing them to be a bit sticky and squeek.

Ours has the occasional squeek but this usually goes once they've been cleaned.

Also, with your wheels you should be able to check the wear on the pads realtively easily to see if you need them!

Cheers

I just passed 46000 this morning. :D

I have had some problems with bits getting stuck between the pads & discs which cause some squeaking, but the rear discs do look in a bit of a bad way, which I've always been confused by considering they do less braking than the fronts, which are in way better nick.

Anyone at Duxford who fancies a look at the amount of material left on my pads, is very welcome.

edited to say that my car is the filthiest it's been for some time, after a little skiddy trip up my farmer mate's muddy drive... It could easily be related to this...

Oh, what's the use!

That does it! I'm off outside to take some photo's of the bloody car and prove it! :)

The squeaking noise could well be the parking (handbrake) shoes rubbing. This happened alot on Cavaliers. The 'cure' is to pull the handbrake on a couple of notches so the shoes just rub, and drive for 2-300 metres. This should clean things up.

Rob and every1 - This is HOW dirty my car is at the moment. This was done in the space of about 4 miles of mucky lanes that had had cows walking along them and the aforementioned drive... Hope this proves it.

I reckon the dirt is all photoshopped! :p

Well luckily black doesnt show up dirt THAT well!

Thats nice and muddy. I washed the car yesterday for the first time in a long while and it water on the driveway was nice and back.... Not to mention the fact that the alloys were as black as coal and needed a lot of Comma wheel cleaner to shift! Didn't polish it all since I ran out of it after the bonnet, but it looks lovely and shiny..for all of 2 seconds!

Is it just me or are the rear seats folded? You and your hitchhiker finding muddy lanes an attractive place? :)

I have squeeks from the brakes somethime under breaking which I love. When you are pulling up you hear the sqeak from the brakes and everybody things it's some sort of rally car or that you were doing a ton.

I got big_k's assurance my rear pads are not in as bad a state as they seem. So, as braking performance has never faded yet, I'm not gonna do nowt about them until I need to.
