Just washed car after first lull in rain and wind and found this rust getting worse. Car is normally garaged and rust is only superficial.

 

The sills were cleaned and sprayed with acid etch primer and diamond silver paint and lacquered over summer prompted by seeing an 04 Fabia vrs with written sills visible from 20m away. Underbody metal was painted with black hammerite metAl paint and spoiler repainted using plastic primer first after rub down.

I might not have sprayed enough here , not sure.  There was always a tiny bit of rust here since buying car 7yrs ago which never really got worse.

 

Do i need to sand down to metal and not leave any rust?

 

Use more acidic etch spray and leave on longer/ spray more coats? Or use something like red oxide primer? I would rather use rattle cans than a brush to keep finish nice even though car is 13 yrs old.

Any advice appreciated?

Not the answer your looking for but I got fed up of my rusty sills on my silver fabia I flapped them down and painted them with silver hammeright hammered,  and from ¼ of a mile away looks grate !! The silver Is a good match and the rust has not come back 

Ha ha. I guess it looks better than brown rust!

I ll try a rub down and leave more time on the time allowed for the etch primer to act. I think I used aldi silver on the hidden parts of the car which is in fact more like storm grey.

Etch primer is for the bare metal.

You want Rust Inhibitor on first and left at least for a day.   Do not even bother is there is moisture about, ie and cold damp metal / rust.

You want heat and dead dry and all wet / muck / mud disposed of from behind.
