Octy Estate vRS MK2 Replacement Tailgate Dilemma - Help PLEASE !

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm wondering about replacing the rusty corroded area around my registration plate and have been told by a garage there's no point doing a partial fix with grounding out and fibreglass replacement as it will only wear out and rust badly again after 6 months.

So I've been advised to source a used tailgate. Having put in the car's details into BreakerLink.com I've been directed to a replacement on eBay taking from Chassis VIN no. prefix TMBHJ21Z3B stating it's compatible with  mine

Notes Make Model Year Variant Type Chassis Engine

THEIRS Skoda Octavia 2012 Petrol Estate 1.4 TSI FWD II 1Z5 1390cc 90KW 122HP CAXA

whereas MINE  is

Skoda Octavia 2012 Diesel Estate 2.0 TDI RS FWD II 1Z5 1968cc 125KW 170HP BMN;CEGA

Advice required please -  should I go ahead and buy this part even though theirs is Petrol 1.4 and mine is a Diesel RS 2.0?

Please forgive any noobie transgressions I make on this forum

Thanks

If you make a sound repair with filler and paint it should last longer than the rest of the car gurtlush!

Same part number; see parts catalogue pages:  2011 Octy estate, 2013 Octy estate.

That said, it's a know weak point on Octy estates so maybe stripping off the internal plastics and tackling the corrosion from both sides?  Use plenty of rust killer after you've cleaned down the area, rustproof prime and then fill/paint as @MicMacsuggests.  Take extra care around the number plate lights as there are a number of fiddly nooks and crannies.
