Passenger side door locks and windows stopped working

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone will be kind enough to point me in the right direction with a problem that's occurred with my 2011 Octavia Mk2 estate. It has been stood on the drive for the last few days during very wet weather, and when I come to use it, neither of the front or rear passenger side (LHS) doors will unlock (either from the remote, the central switch, or using the interior handles); the windows on the passenger side have also stopped working (from driver's or individual switches); the passenger wing mirror no longer adjusts; and the indicator light on the passenger wing mirror has also stopped working.
I've read all the posts I can find, and studied the circuit diagrams, but I'm puzzled as I would have expected a fault to either affect just the front passenger door, or both rear doors. Any suggestions as to where to start looking for a cause would be appreciated.

How old is the battery?

It sounds as though there is no power getting through from the front wing to the passenger side door/s.

In between the door hinges is a black plastic bellow, connecting the inner wing to the door. Through this run all of the wires to the various functions embedded inside the door.

Over time the wires become brittle and can stretch and break, although the issue is nearly always n the drivers side as this door is opened and closed far more often. I've not heard of this issue affecting the rear door too.

First thing to check is the bellow, you can unclip either end and check for obvious signs of damaged wires. Whilst in there use a multimeter to see if power is getting to the wires as they enter the bellow, if not and the wires are all intact you can rule them out.

Good point: I did put it on charge in the hope that might sort the problem, but I've just been out and tried using the central unlock button again while the engine was running, but no joy, and the battery is giving a reading of 12.5V without the engine running.

Yes , that seems most likely. I've had a look at the bellow/wires on the driver's door, but no signs of wear, and obviously I can't get to the bellows on the passenger side doors. I was wondering if there was somewhere (hopefully relatively accessible) where I could check the wiring for power on the way to the passenger doors, to try and pin down where the problem might lie.

I also forgot to say the amber "bulb out" warning light comes on too.

Check the bellows on the driver's door too as that is where some of the wires go.

While you have the driver's door open, make sure the two drainage holes or slots at the bottom of the door are not blocked. Water build up in the driver's door can cause the common electronics to do funny things, such as you are experiencing.

My money is on water ingress to the connector of the drivers door motor controller which sends commands to all the other door controllers, or a partially fractured wire in the bellows to the drivers door

The LED repeater indicators are housed in the door mirrors, which are fed by the same electrical source as the lock mechanism and window etc.

Thanks for the helpful comments, much appreciated. I've checked the drain holes, and they were clear, and I've taken the inside panel off the driver's door and as far as I can see, no signs of water ingress/damage to any of the connectors. I'll report back as and when I get a resolution.

If you like your car & want to keep it, if it has any real value to you then buy VCDS and it will tell you where the problem is, sure its an investment but once you have it it will repay you many times over.

I speak as someone that tried everything to find what had deadlocked all the doors except the drivers on my MK1 Octavia and finally ended up scrapping it only to find that owning VCDS was an essential for the far more capricious MK2 that I replaced it with, I am sure that had I bit the bullet before I would have diagnosed and cured the problem very quickly.

To my shame I did not even know that the MK1 had Canbus, thats how reliable the electrics were until the end.

I’d be very interested to hear how this problem was resolved. Almost a year to the day I’ve got the exact same problem with my daughters 08 Octavia Mk2 . So far I’ve inspected the drivers side door bellow and found two previously (badly) repaired wires (she’s had the car ~10years  so repair must have been +/- 2 years from new and I’m amazed its lasted that long...). The two wires were the brown and yellow coming from the lower yellow connector on the A post.  It seemed that at least one repair had fallen apart but after making good the connections the problem remains so perhaps that was just a red herring.

Nothing works on the passenger side doors (locking, windows). I don’t have the wiring diagram and I’m wondering if there is any common power or signal (canbus?) fed from the drivers door that might effect all the functions on the passenger side. If there is and I can repair then perhaps I don’t have to try and rip off the door card from the locked doors on the passenger side and investigate there.

The relevant VCDS out put is:

With my original problem, we ended up having to take it to the local Skoda main dealer, who proposed replacing the control units for both the front and rear LHS doors. In the event, they only needed to change the N/S/F door control unit the code for which was S1T0959702SZ0L, priced at £266, so with labour & VAT it was £760 :( . Hope that helps!

Thanks! That’s very helpful, gives me a bit of confidence to start working on the N/S/F door  - with the challenge of removing the door card with the door closed!

Did you ever manage to sort your issue. I’m having exactly the same problem.

Thanks

Many thanks for this. I had exactly the same problem on my Skoda Octavia Elegance 2011 recently - all the electrics suddenly stopped working in the two passenger side doors. It was intermittent for a while and unfortunately I left it until it went with the doors locked.

I checked the driver's side loom wires for continuity and they were all fine. I'd had a quick look at the passenger side loom wires when the issue was intermittent and they looked fine although I didn't check them.

I managed to get the passenger front door card off without damaging it and with the door locked - it wasn't that hard to do. I then thought it was worth a shot buying a new control unit which had the numbers: "1T0959702S" on the motor and "5ko 959 792 a" on the module bit itself. This was easy to replace and I'm very happy to say immediately fixed the issue. I got the part from here btw: Volkswagen Touran 1T Window Regulator Motor Front Passenger Side 1T0959702S

If anyone has the same issue and needs any help, give me a shout.
