changing xenons

Featured Replies

it seems i have these xenon headlights and one of them has started to have a pinkish tint and my brother says its starting to go so i need to change it and i should change them both

theres seems to be several different types, halfords suggests i need d2s but my brother showed me a youtube video and they seem to be d3s, so how do i tell which ones i need?

and which ones? theres ones for 25£ each or some winpower ones that are 24£ a pair. any advice would be apriciated

It should use D1s xenons. The difference is that a D1s has an integrated igniter which is the silver box at the base whereas a D2s will use a separate igniter.

D3s and D4s are not compatible as they are mercury free, this means they require different voltages and therefore a different ballast.

There are lots of low quality or counterfeit xenons on the market, I'd suggest you stick to a decent brand from a authorised supplier. For example, two of these: https://www.powerbulbs.com/product/osram-xenarc-d1s-xenon-hid-bulb-single

as above 1Ds is the correct bulb for a PFL octavia and stick to authorised suppliers as loads of fake bubs on ebay

Definitley replace as a pair - overtime they lose output and go through a colourshift.  If you only replace one you will have 2 different coloured lights.

That same bulb at euro car parts is currently £71 more expensive, per bulb!  Ouch 🤯

Stick a search in YouTube and have a look.

I’m  looking at replacing my bulbs in my 2011 VRS FL and there is loads of info on there. It all depends what colour you want the bulb to be, how bright and how much light you want thrown in front of you.

At the moment osrams cool blue range seems to be a contender for around £80 a pair. You can get up to 7000k which although listed as for off road use only would give you a massive improvement.

osram night breakers are also very good although less blue and more of a yellow tinge

In what way is 7000k an improvement?

For maximum light output, you want something in the 4300 to 5000k range. Anything above that and the usable light output will start decreasing...
