Steering wheel buttons and horn and airbag not working

Featured Replies

Hello Guys,

I have really weird issue - the light of the airbag is presenting on the dashboard, i did connect my computer with the VCDS and it says the steering wheel airbag is not connected.

Then i checked the horn and the steering wheel controls and none of the are working.

I tried to fix it by myself by removing the airbag and check the connectors but everything seems fine.

Could you please advise what could be the issue? and which part should i replace in order to have everything back to normal?

Thanks,

And as I didn't know what a clockspring was until I asked recently in a car context, it is the way the wiring connects from the static wiring harness to the connections and switches etc on moving parts of the steering wheel.

I had just googled this to explain to my son! Not Skoda but a good explanation

Thanks!

How can i replace it by myself? is this something i can do? any youtube guidance?

Yes, its relatively easy, I removed and refitted mine using common sense and MK1 eyeballs that do not have an internet connection.

I didn't know what one was either!

Do you know what is the part number of this clockspring?

I think that will depend on the year and model of your car.

This very similar on a Golf.

I have the part number 5k0953569al, but i don't know where i can open the wheel screw? can someone help me where i can buy it online? also for the part number?

eBay or a car breakers will probbaly be cheaper.

On this age of car, the control module and clockspring are attached so you'll probably need to read the coding form the old one and apply it to the new one using VCDS or similar.

I'd also suggest you make sure the hardware and software part numbers match on the new parts...

I have mine replaced a year ago.

The part number on the invoice is 5K0 953 569 BD

This is for a 2016 year model with a 1.4 TSI engine.

As far as I know, the first, and the last two digits change, depending on the year of manufacturing, and the type of engine.

Hi Guys,

Finally i was able to replace the clockspring by my own, it was normal (not hard, not too easy, but OK)

After i complete with the replacement, i connected VCDS and change the coding to the old one, but it seems i don't see the cruise control option under ->Engine->coding->long helper.

do you know what is incorrect? or what should i change?

thanks!

What is the problem with the cruise control?
The cruise control wires don't go through the clockspring.

Everything is good, i thought the cruise control is not working but it's working.

What i did see, that now when clicking on the alarm key to close the windows, only the rear windows are closing but the fronts do not close, any idea what can cause that?

The fronts need resetting.
Close the window using door switch, release switch, hold switch up for about 5 seconds.
They should then be OK, maybe need to do that to both windows.

Hi lioriK and dear community,

I just got my 2017 TSI Kodiaq back from routine inspection at one of the authorized auto repair shops.

The car came back with the exact same problem described above. The auto rapair shop manager says this is a coincidence and he asks for 3000 NIS (910 USD) If I want him to repair it.
I don't buy the coincidence side of the story. I think they touched the wrong something with the wrong voltage (he says the clockspring wire is burnt) or I don't know what.
The car came into the repair shop with excellent condition for a 45K km inspection.

What are the chances this is a coincidence? Are those clockspring wires tend to break regularly?
LIoriK, is it possible to contact you for this matter? I'm from Israel as well.

Thanks very much!!!!

I’m experiencing the same problem with my 2016 Superb, Skoda Winchester wanting nearly £500 to repair. Shocking amount of money.

  • 1 year later...

Went to this guy in Oldham today who removed the squib, repaired it and replaced all for £150.
