What's a porker?

I love them both - and I know that the S2K is bombproof and goes like hot-snot, but I really like the look and sound of the Z...therefore I'd go with one of those - in yellow please :D

What's a porker?

It's a Porsche...there's a thread about car names somewhere!

Found it - clicky

Much as I like the S2000 it's just too much of an effort to drive it quickly for any length of time. Same goes for the 350Z, but to a lesser extent - you could live with it more easily on a day-to-day basis.

Boxster, yeah nice car, but you're really up into the next class in terms of running costs.

The new MX5 is getting rave reviews, never liked them much myself but surely worth a look.

I'd have the S2000. The Z car has got a seriously fat a**s as a convertible.

As coupe's go, the Z car takes some beating though. Got an eye on second values myself.

S2k, with removable hard top for winter!

Having owned an S2000 and currently owning a 350Z (coupe), I prefer the 350Z.

The Honda is better built and more agile with sharper steering & handling and is fantastic when you thrash it, but is very tiring and frustrating when you can't or aren't in the mood; 6k+ revs and it's awsome, below that it's rather ordinary. Also, if you are, er, of a larger build, the S2000 may be a tight fit.

The 350Z is a better all-round day to day car and sounds fantastic. It is, in my experience a lot cheaper to run as well: Fuel comsumption is similar to the S2K, but insurance and servicing cost quite a bit less.

I really liked my S2K, and if I could have afforded to, I would have kept it and have the 350Z. However, given a choice between the two, I'd take the 350Z.

The only way you'll know which is for you is to take an extended test drive in both and see which you prefer.

how about one of these insted?

but it would be so hard to choose.. they both have merits in different categories and they both cons. personally i would go for the 350 Z. they have much more road presence and if i was just sum1 on the street the s2k just simply wouldnt shout special to me. though u may want stealthism both cars will get noticed. the 350 z just has that summink about it and 3.5 V is going to be alot less work. i had a bit race with a friend in a 350 z and theyre suprisingly quick for the weight of them. still beat him though :D if u can afford the running costs of the Z then go 4 that.

I'd love a VX220 Turbo. A great choice of car IMHO.

S2000 is being axed this year, 350Z has just had its first facelift. Why would you want to buy a car that is being axed;)?

350Z insurance - £800

S2000 insurance Quote - £1300

The ZGT also has a monster stereo and a nicer, quicker, quieter (on the motorway etc) soft top.

S2000 seats are better though and the 350Z has crappy interior door handles.

I dont think the headlights on the S2000 in the picture are standard are they?

The S2000 in that pic is the 2004 onward facelift model.

I am not sure why but in the UK the S2000 is insurance group 20!

My insurance for the S2000 here costs about 15% more than my Saab 93 Aero (last years premium). I think the 93 is group 16 in the UK.

The stock S2000 stereo is pants as well. With an aftermarket HU the stock speakers are ok and you can hear it up to about 75-85mph where the speed limit permits ;)

I think the S2000 is a sports car, the 350Z is a GT.

You could live with either on a day to day basis - something that cant really be said about a VX220 or Elise - can it ?

It was a very difficult decision, especially given the Z is significantly more expensive. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. They're both great cars.

That video of the Japanese Gentlemen racing round a track is awesome! How quick is that GT-R?

There's not really that much in it between the Z and the S2K either.

Some really helpful feedback as well, thankyou.

Has anyone got any pics of the facelifted Z?

Is the S2K to be replaced?

Facelifted Z - (time to play spot the difference)

http://paultan.org/archives/2005/12/17/2006-nissan-350z-facelift/

Interior trim has changed a little

Factory Satnav now an option (previously dealer fit only)

Power increased to 300PS

The Rays alloys are now standard

The car costs £200 more (but the Rays alloys were £1000, so its actually £800 cheaper ;))

The Blutooth phone kit will now actually work

Not seen anything about S2000 replacement, sadly I think it will go the same way as the NSX.

If you're looking for a Z dont bother with non-GT Pack cars.

I see the new 350Z has the Enkei alloys from (what is called over here) the 350Z 'Track' model.

The 'Track' model in the US also has Brembo brakes and cloth seats.

As for the living with either car as your everyday transport, I second what Goochie said - I've happily lived with the S2000 as our only car in the household for 8 months.

You'll be amazed at what you can transport in a drop-top with the roof down! Stepladders are no problem!

Of the 2 choices given, I would go for the Z.

The S2000 has to be driven hard to get the best out of it, and that soon becomes tiresome on long runs. With that of course comes increased fuel consumption.

The Z has the bigger engine, but because of this doesnt need to have the nuts reved out of it to get the same performance. To me the Z also looks better and has a more modern less dated look about it.

However, as you can see in my sig I own neither. Last year when looking for an open top car, I spent a long time deciding what to get and in the end went for a BOXSTER S (jumps for cover). The S has a lovely smooth 3.2 Flat 6 engine that is suprisingly economical for the engine size. On a run I get more than 31MPG, and the sound once the Variocam cuts it at 4K rpm is amazing. Running costs seem reasonable to me, the last service carried out at a porsche main dealer was cheaper than the octy vRS. However the Boxster has some common problems relating to the engine that could mean potentialy expensive repairs or a new engine.

After all that, I can't have either of them!

Been round a few dealerships today with Mrs P and her trusty wheelchair. First stop was the Honda garage for the delights of the S2000. Mrs P absolutely loved the car. No test drive (I've booked one anyway), but no matter how many bits I took off the chair and how many times I folded it and turned it round, it just wasn't goin in the boot. There's no space behind the seats either. Very impressed with the interior though. the salesman was really friendly and genuine. I actually felt like he wasn't going to steal my wallet the minute my back was turned. He recommended the BMW Z4 (same dealership you see)

So off to BMW. Looked at the Z4 M roadster (as if....) Wheelchair would have fitted in the boot, but it just didn't have the same impact as the S2000. Too business like and clinical. Did not book test drive. Mrs P said it was too posh for us.

Next stop Nissan. They didn't have a 350Z convertible but the salesman showed me a coupe and there was no chance. That mahoosive strut brace just takes up too much room. I'd like to see the rag top's boot though.....

Still not as good looking as the S, IMO.

Off to Audi and the TT Roadster had a decent boot which would have accomodated the wheelchair. Mrs P and I were universally ignored by the whole sales team however, so they can stick their automotive icon up their Rse (too common anyway)

I was beginning to ponder whether buying a roadster was just me being selfish and I should compromise. Then I remembered Mrs P's face light up when she saw the S2000 and how she enjoys a good blat in a fast car which reminds her of how she used to love driving. then I got to thinkin Why shouldn't she be allowed to enjoy a nice car. Rang the Honda dealer back to enquire about luggage racks for the boot.....

Next stop, Skoda / VW. Looked at the new Octy vRS and the new Jetta. Both would fit the bill perfectly for practicallity. The Jetta was somewhat boring inside, the Octy interested me more. The telling moment was when Mrs P looked at the Octy and said "That's just the same as the one we've got isn't it?" Oh dear.

So the quest begins to find a decent sports car with a big boot......Practical and exciting?

I suppose I'll have to get a Boxster with runflats.

The boot on the Boxster is not as deep as the S2k but wider; Maybe more practical for the 'chair? IIRC Porsche designed it to fit a small sized golf bag if that helps.

What about an Integra Type R? Large hatchback bootspace, if the older one (officially imported) is too dated the new shape Integras (DC5) are about 13-14k in the UK as a Jap import.

Are you looking for a RWD cabriolet ideally?

Give us some more information (max budget, name any makes/models you don't want etc ) and no doubt us car enthusiasts will be able to make many suggestions!

Thanks John, I'bve started a new thread on the subject,

Here!

  • 2 months later...

You may call me shallow, but going on looks alone I will go for the Z every time   The Honda just looks too tiny in the flesh and frankly nothing special, imo of course :)

S2000 will sound loads better than a Z from 6000rpm+ VTEC  ,be more reliable and will have a better resale value :) .

Thats why i have an integra type r and my missis has a VRS :) she used to have a fiat

I've not seen one of these Integra type R's, do you have a pic?
