New Scala on PCH + a question

Featured Replies

Hi Guys 🖐️

I managed to get my order in for a new Scala 1 litre SEL with DSG before we needed to isolate ourselves for the next 12 weeks. Our 4th Škoda and our 3rd using PCH.

We currently have a 1litre Karoq SEL / DSG, but our PCH runs out on the 31st of August. The very BEST car we have ever owned! Would have loved another but as many will be aware, the Karoq is not currently available with the 1 litre engine. Apparently they are in short supply (popularity / reliability) and they are being reserved for new models across the VAG network such as the Škoda Scala, V.W. T-Cross etc. I believe they are to be reintroduced at some time, according to our dealer, but no dates as yet.

We had wanted to stick with the 1 litre engine or something very similar and so after a good look around everywhere and after being offered an amazing PCH deal with our favourite dealership, we decided that our new car come, September 1st will be a Scala. The SEL has almost all the “bits” we would normally order, but we added Heated Seats as the Old Bones appreciate the added comfort. Hoping that the Scala will give me similar MPG to the Karoq!🤞

PCH, for anyone wondering. Means “Personal Contract Hire”. This comprises of a deposit and 23 monthly payments. The car is registered as a private lease (Hire) with a leasing company (in our case VW Finance). When the lease has run its term, you hand the car back - That’s it. The lease company put the car on the road and Tax it for the two years. You put fuel in and insure it and make sure the car is in reasonable condition on its return. Full manufacturers warranty, breakdown assistance etc etc is included, along with a milaege allowance of 8000 mile per year. Additional mileage is available for a small uplift in cost.

The BIG advantage is it is a very cheap way to run a new car for 2 years and it’s so simple. For example: Our SEL DSG with the addition of the heated seats (a £255 optional extra). Works out at £54 per week including the initial deposit VAT etc! A Scala 1 liter SE Manual is just a tad under £45 a week! If I can help anyone who needs more details, send me a PM here at Briskoda together with your email address and I will try and help.

When our dealer checked lead times for a factory order it was running at 10 to 12 weeks. I wonder how Coronavirus will affect that? Hopefully, ours should not be impacted too much as its currently 23 weeks before we anticipate delivery.

QUESTION: I wonder if I could trouble some kind soul for a favour. I need to know the height of the tailgate lip from the floor when it’s fully open. Could you measure it for me please? It was the one thing I forgot when reviewing our prospective order and cannot find the information anywhere online, and the “retail” side of things is rather restricted by people working from home etc. so no joy there either.

Many thanks in advance! Stay well everyone and hopefully we will make it through to the other side of Covid19…….Tony

I wanted another 1.0 Karoq SE Tech DSG to replace mine, but I have just taken delivery of a 1.6 tdi SE Tech DSG in Moon White with a spare wheel 10,000miles p.a. at £181 a month PCH. (I don't need heated seats).

I suspect we use the same dealer

Hi I have a 6 week old 1ltr DSG SEL Scala great car far better drive than the Fabia's and Yeti

Did just tad over 500 miles on Sunday, Devon and back from Hertfordshire on a single tank with 75 miles to spare  keeping to UK speed limits. (3 hour break in between)

Managed both ways and had very little in aches and pains in my 70 year old body, used to crawl out of the Fabia Estate at 250 miles hurting all over.

I use the motorways on a regular basis to see grandchildren, I highly recommend the adaptive cruise-control if you do a lot of motorway driving (M25 Heathrow to the M5 Bristol never put my foot on the accelerator once)

My wife likes to drive but she is under 5ft tall, always has problems with seats and shutting tailgates

On our new Scala we got electric front drivers seat and a remote opening tailgate.

The drivers seat and steering have great adjustments and she has no problems with all round vision and foot controls

The remote works perfectly from some distance open it but will only work from a very short distance to close it.

Answer to your question on fairly level ground 78 inches old money or 198 cm's

Hopefully your car won’t be delayed too much.  AFAIK production has stopped (certainly has at other VW Group facilities) so a lot will depend on how long it takes to get the factory and supply chain up and running again.  At least you have plenty of window.  Getting the car to you might take a little longer as well depending on what pressure remains on the logistics networks.

I have a car of the same spec (without heated seats) waiting for me at the dealer for collection once we are allowed out again.  What colour did you go for?

Hi Guys: P6bJOHN - Yetiherts & Tarby

Many thanks for the replies - Sorry for the delay in replying!

P6bJOHN. Yes I suspect you are correct! I have used them now for the past nine years and have only good things to say about them! Service and sales departments are superb in my experience, A real can-do attitude and always with a smile. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. Our sales Guy Ian is superb!

Yetiherts. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to measure it for me! All the other information is most welcome. Good information that brochures don’t give!.

Like you, we also had a Yeti previously. Two in fact, one after the other! I was so disappointed when we last came to change that we could no longer get a Yeti. They were amazing and always put a smile on my face whenever I drove them, I thought we would not find a car to equal them! Disappointment turned to sheer joy when we finally drove the Karoq. Škoda had done the impossible (in my mind anyway). They had made huge steps forward over the Yeti in terms of comfort and reliability and the 1 litre engine is a dream. Up until going to look for its replacement, we had not once had to return to the dealership for anything whatsoever! Hope the Scala is as good!

Tarby. Kind and encouraging words indeed. Yes, hopefully no delays for delivery with such a long lead time. Interestingly, when we got our first Yeti, it was a 26 / 28 week delivery for factory orders. Even towards the end of that time scale, we had no indication of a build date! Then, early on a Friday afternoon in August 2010 I happened to call in the showroom whilst out shopping with SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) and we spoke to our salesman. Sorry Sales Executive! He said he had checked the system that morning and still no update on the Build Date. He then proceeded to show me the system online, and sure enough the Build Date entry was blank. He continued to point out several things on the page when suddenly the page refreshed and in the column was shown “Built” with a time adjacent showing the current time (13:14)!!! Hallelujah“ Now the wait begins” was what he said next. He anticipated several weeks before it would arrive at the dealership.

Fast forward to the Tuesday (only 4 days Later) at 9am. A phone call from our dealership; “Guess what I am looking at” Yes! “Tigger” had arrived! Everything must have fell just right with transportation and shipping and we took delivery the following day. Don’t suppose anything like that could happen again - but you never know!

We have absolutely loved the 1 litre TSI engine in the Karoq and really wanted another, but it was not available in that model. What we were offered was a Karoq with either a 1.5 litre TSI (almost double the price on PCH) or a 1.6 Diesel which we definitely did not want, and yet again considerably more expensive. We also had the choice of a Kamiq or a Scala with the 1 litre TSI. We really liked the Scala and the price was amazing, beating anything the competition had into a cocked hat!. So, SWMBO saw the SEL in Energy Blue and thought it was great and after a quick test drive. that’s what we ordered!

Thanks again for your input and info! All greatly appreciated! Stay Well & Stay Safe…………..My best regards….Tony
