Brakes Pads for Yeti variants

Featured Replies

Hi

Need new brake pads for my skoda yeti. There are 3 sizes 146mm and 156mm and a different height (see images) for the different vehicle type 1ZF  1ZE  and 1ZA. How can I tell what vehicle type I have and what brake pads I need? I have tried the VIN website which is no use. Car parts online and euro car parts throw up the two types of brake. I guess I will have to measure the size of the brake disc? but is there a quicker way?
Thanks in advance

!70, 312 diam but pads for the 140 and the 170 are the same!

Hi.  The 1ZF etc code should be on a sticker in the service book, along with all the other letter codes identifying the equipment on your vehicle.  If this sticker is missing you may find another one attached to the metal boot floor, possibly under the spare wheel or one of the storage boxes.  These boxes are held in with plastic "mushrooms" which unscrew with an Allen key.  Failing that, you will need to give your VIN to a Skoda Dealer who will be able to look up the codes, though I appreciate that's probably not an option at the moment.

Front brake PR code is rarely on that sticker, sadly.

ErWin can give you all the codes, but you'd have to pay a few Euros to download it.

But he is quoting a 170 in his id!!

Thanks all for replying on my first post. What I did was take off the current brake pads and found that they were 155cm across and 66cm in height but according to the eurocarparts site these pads should be fitted to a 288mm disc and my disc is 312mm across. This car was serviced by Skoda last year when they replaced the pads in a full service. Did they put the wrong pads on?
So I went for the brake pads that I assume belong to the 312mm disc. Those that are 155mm in length and instead 71mm in height. Unfortunately due to the coronavirus they can't be delivered for another 2 weeks. We need the car to travel to the shops as we live in the country so we are in a little bit of trouble.
So I won't know what the answer is until the brake pads arrive and I try and fit them.
Thanks again for replies and will keep you posted.

Hi

I would be surprised if the caliper assembly allowed the fitment of more than one size of pad.  I think your measurements of what's in place take precedence over any 3rd party website data, which in my experience is never 100% accurate.  They simply don't have the resources to check all the variations that occur in production.

As a case in point, my 2012 1.4 petrol Yeti has the larger rear discs and pads as fitted to the 2 litre diesels, but many lists quote just the smaller size as used on the 1.2 petrol.

Which still leaves me in the dark as what to get. I looked in the boot as suggested. No stickers. I can't find my PR code anywhere. VIN no on skoda website is useless and no others are working. I even had a look at Halfords website which is even worse than the others. see pic
What I have to go on is 2 things. My brake disc size 312mm on more than one websites suggest I should go for the bigger 155mm length and 71mm height pad. and the Caliper VL581 which is the same as the RIDEX 78B0037 . OEM no OEN 1K0 615 123 E — SKODA

Hi

I have just taken a look at the Brembo catalogue, which has more detail than most.  The 312 mm diameter discs are associated with code PR1ZA and a Teves caliper.  The drawing of the matching P85 146 pads shows that they are 155 mm wide, but two of them are 71 mm high (with a "bump" shape at the top) and the other two are 66 mm high, one of which is fitted with an electric wear indicator sensor.  So maybe the pads are slightly different between inner and outer, though I would expect the actual friction parts to be the same size.  If you want to look for yourself check out the online catalogue on the Brembo website.

Picking up on Austin 7's comment, which seems to make sense, if you are going to order them on-line why not order both sizes and immediately return the size that you don't need?  Presumably ordering two sets rather than one won't increase the delivery postage costs and it might cost you £3 or so to return the set you don't need but a small price to pay to avoid ordering the wrong set and all the wasted time and effort that might entail.

use amazon, return could be free!

ok, so you need to check if the larger size has the wear sensor, mine certainly have, they are by trw and are supplied specific for 312 dia discs!

If you must use Amazon,  at least use Amazon Smile and get a small donation to your nominated charity. Prices etc. are identical.

the fronts pads for 288mm and 312mm discs will be the same as the calipers are the same only differences are the carriers to allow bigger discs,

Just curious, what would be the point of larger discs, if the pads are all the same size?

Surely the pad size dictates the amount of friction surface, so fitting bigger discs without also fitting bigger pads kind of defeats the object?

The pads will get more leverage on the larger discs as they are further from the centre even though the clamping force is the same. The larger discs also aid cooling assuming some spirited or track driving.

In most cases, it probably doesn't make much difference for a road car though ;)

greater braking surface area of disc per revolution, equates to better(?) braking?

As Langers said, leverage and cooling, friction is independant of surface area.

To the OP, why dont you simply measure them? You dont need to remove the wheels, just straighten out a wire coat hanger and make a caliper guage.

We must live in a crazy world where people suggest ordering 2 items knowing that one will be delivered and promptly returned when they could simply measure and order the right part.

Ok. Solved.
Thanks for all the great advice. One person suggested I measure them. I am assuming they meant the old pads. I did that. The problem with that is how do I know that the pads that were put in by the dealer were correct when there are 2 other alternatives?
The pads the dealer put in were for a disc size of 280mm when my disc size is 312mm. So I bought the discs for the 312mm size and they fit. They work. Conclusion. Always double check.

So again thanks for the info.

Have you fitted new pads to the existing discs? There is nothing wrong with this, but those discs look a little strange? It might simply be the photo / reflection but the colour of the disc surface looks different across the surface, almost as though they've suffered from overheating in the past? Is that blueing I can see?

You mentioned the brake change was urgent, what was the issue with them?

It also looks as though your calipers have been painted in the past. From the factory they're silver.

I created a rough and ready tool to measure my brake discs a few years ago...

Hi and thanks fr your interest. It's not the size of the discs as I have measured them using calipers and they are 312mm. The brake pads that were in them were meant for 280mm discs they were 155mm 67mm and I have purchased the 71mm pads meant for 312mm discs. They fit and they work

The pads had seized up and the wheel would not turn, perhaps because of the incorrect size.

Not sure about the colouring. They look ok to me

again thanks for info

The point was that the OP wasn't sure which size would be right so to only realise that the wrong ones had been ordered when everything had been stripped down would have been somewhat annoying. It's really not that unusual these days to order two items knowing one will go back - the down side of internet shopping compared with "I'll try it on whilst I'm in the shop".

Anyway, good to hear the problems now been sorted.
