Depending how deep the scratch is you may not need to go down the chipex route.    I corrected this scratch yesterday with a DA polished, medium cut pad and meguiars #105

According to the blurb for the polish, yes.   The orange pad is what I used to sort the defect shown on the rear bumper I pictured a moment ago 👍 (tried loads of different brands of pads and th

I’ve tried cheapo, non-brand pads and get on with them ok. The only difference I can tell, IME, is the longevity of the pads. You’ll get more use out of a branded pad vs a cheapo version.

I was beginning to think after 3 pages you were indecisive, but now I'm not sure.

i had it all planned till people said da is the one to go. i had them all bookmarked, im still getting the orange pad and meg 105 but unsure about which da to go for.

I was joking if you hadn't guessed. At least you are thorough. After doing the same job for 29 years I would love to sit on my arse for 12 or 13 weeks getting 80% of my normal pay but my CEO seems to think my job is vital to keeping the nation in toys as well as the rest of Europe so wishing I could just chill and enjoy the sunshine like everyone else. Rant over, the orbital polisher seems like the way to go if you need a slight nudge.

thank you, not guessed you was joking, if anything i thought you was slightly miffed at my constant indecisiveness :D

is 680w enough tho?

Although I’ve got both DA and rotary, my honest preference is the rotary. I find it easier to achieve the results I want in a shorter time.

Harder to handle and could cause lots more problems than the DA (strike through of the lacquer is far easier with a rotary, for example) plus it was less than half the price of the DA.

That said, I think starting out by going down the DA route is the wiser choice. Build up your knowledge, experience and confidence first.

If I were you, I would stick to the all-in-one polish you linked earlier (or even meguiars #205 instead) rather the Megs #105 as that’s a high-cut compound and you may struggle refining it down (with the dark colour car you’re working on you may find that you’re left with a light haze if your technique is not quite right) unless you have the budget for both #105 and #205 (105 to cut the lacquer and 205 to finish it off)

My DA (das-6 pro plus) is 900w. At £130 it was over twice the price I paid for the Silverline rotary polisher I have.

The 680w will be ok, but doesn’t have the same torque of the 900w, so will take more effort to achieve the same results.

Eventually, you’ll need / want a 3” backing plate and pads to get into the tight spaces ..... it’s a slippery slope and expensive game this detailing lark 😅

If you’re going to all this effort, you’ll also wanna protect your hard work and extend the protection given. I use wax still (others use a sealant or ceramic coatings) and would suggest searching eBay or detailing companies like clean your car and the like for sample pots of wax.

thank you again but the polisher you recommended is a rotary though

il look into waxing stuff soon.

This is the sort of kit I started out with when I got a DA ...

Possibly beyond your budget, but has a cut and finish pad and polish.

But, what you’ve posted would get you started of it is beyond your means right now.

Yes, I prefer the rotary polisher over DA, but the DA is safer and easier to handle than the rotary, which is why most people will suggest starting out with a DA.

I first started out using a Rotary and my first machine was ....

.... which can be found on eBay for about £50/60. A few years later I invested in a DA kit with the meguiars 105 & 205 combo like I linked in my last post.

that link you put up is a dual action one, not a rotary. which was your first rotary and i will have a look for it? should i start out with a rotary?

You’re right, my bad 😊

Silverline rotary polisher - eBay # 182719808326

DA - eBay # 272142845336

As I said, I started out by first buying the Silverline rotary as it was cheaper. Many people don’t suggest starting out with a rotary, but I did and never had any issue with striking through the paint work and got use to the way the machine handled.

As long as you are careful with the machine around panel edges and keep the machine moving, thus keeping the temperature of the panel down, you should be fine with a rotary.

Read the thread from detailing world so you understand how the machines work and decide which route you wanna go.

thank you, quite like the silverline one though.

The Silverline rotary is much bigger and heavier than the DA and therefore harder to control.

Not so much of an issue on a bonnet or roof, but harder to control on the side of the car.

What’s drawing you to the Silverline?!

Thought as much 😂

If I recall, the original Das-6 was only about 680/700w, so that machine can’t be all that different. Go for it!

Cool 👍

... and some decent microfibre towels to remove the polish.

First use of the 3" today and I've managed to part the foam from the plate lol.

Plenty of other bits to concentrate on whilst awaiting the replacement which was in one of the earlier links.
