Superb 280 Sportline - Load BANG over bumps

Featured Replies

Occasionally when driving over a dip or bump in the road where the front suspension is fully loaded there's a really load BANG coming from the front of the car. It kind of sound like the suspension is reaching its maximum travel, but surely that can't be the case?

Has anyone else experienced this? I've not had this on any other car.

It sounds absolutely horrific.

Car is a 2018 Sportline 280 with 16k mile on it.

Could the transport blocks be still in and neither one of the previous two owners have noticed?

It was my first thought, so well worth a look!

Never experienced that on my car, so something is definitely wrong. Yes check for transport blocks as a first easy step.

Have you broken a coil spring rather than 2 years of not knowing if transportation blocks are still in place?

I've checked this morning, no transport blocks.

I've only had the car a few month, and its due its first service in May, so I guess I'll have the dealership look at it then.

I’ve found the front suspension reaches maximum travel on my Sportline when going over some speeedbumps at a reasonably slow speed, almost as if the front springs aren’t quite right for the weight of the car.

Because  it’s slow speed, it doesn’t crash though.

For me it's mainly when I'm doing 40-50 mph and hit a dip or bump in the road, that I'm assuming causes the suspension to read its maximum travel. It sounds terrible and I'm shocked that it does it.

I recently replaced my Octavia with a 2019 Superb SE L Executive Estate with 11,500 miles on it. I've experienced a similar issue.

The car handles well and the ride is very comfortable but occasionally, going over a bad pothole, there is a very loud bang and shudder that is really uncomfortable - to the point where I half expect to hear the tyre having burst, it seems so violent.

It does only seem to happen on bad surfaces with potholes, but unfortunately there's a lot of them about .

I did wonder about the transport blocks but the ride and handling is otherwise perfect.

I would guess that it might be a broken spring.  They tend to break on the first coil so not always obvious to see when you look at it.  Only really becomes clear when the weight is off the spring completely.  I had similar experience with a Fabia and a Mondeo, OK I know its not SKODA but a Macpherson strut  looks more or less the same no matter what manufacturer your looking at.  I would jack it up so wheel is clear of ground and have a check of the spring.   Please remember not to be under the car without stands.

Do you have a dash cam with audio? If not try and get a passenger to record the noise on a mobile phone if you're able to find a stretch of road where the bang is easy to replicate.

This will no doubt be invaluable when the dealer will almost certainly report back one of two possible reasons:

No fault found.

They all do it.

Given that most of us are all housebound try to get behind both front wheels and take some photos and share them on here.

After reading this I checked and  just found a transport block on the driver side only. Make doubly sure you don't have this as your symptoms sound very similar to mine.
