Anyone running a GTB2260vklr turbo on their VRS?.

Hello all, 

 

Interested to know of whom is running the GTB2260vklr turbo on their Fabia VRS ?. 

 

How's it drive as a daily ?, Good power band?.

What kind of power/torque are you getting?.

What supporting mods do you have ?.

Was fitting the oil/water lines difficult ?.

Exhaust downpipe/ intercooler piping easy to make fit?

 

Also anyone have this turbo bolted to a mostly stock engine?. 

 

Im looking into getting one and wanted to know what else i should get done before fitting.

There was a phase a few years back of people fitting these to the VRS, there were problems with reliability on the stock injectors.

In my opinion the turbo is too big for the engine, this leads to excessive spool time, lag and a narrow power band which makes for a horrible daily driver.

Stick with a 17 on the exhaust for a daily driver and remember that all these engines have stock bottom ends because there are no aftermarket parts available.

I have a 1756 on there at the moment, its not bad pretty fun. Yeh if the GTB2260 were to come in even later it would be not great for road driving. Darkside seem to rate the GTB2260 highly. So being ballbearing makes no difference to spool time?.

 

Below 70mph its good fun, Just very lacking in top end with the 1756 turbo. Acceleration from motorway speeds feels like im in a 100bhp hire car.

What 1756 do you have ? 

 

My VRS has a GTB1756vk and I would not describe it as a 100bhp hire car at motorway speeds, quiet the opposite, the GTB1756 can hold 2bar boost all the way to the red line with no tapering off at higher rpm.

 

At the minute the GTB2060vklr seems to be the favourite turbo on the facebook VRS group, the sound like they spool fast.

No, just marketing drivel, oil bushes have almost no friction once the engines running.

Facebook talk = pub talk.

 

I'm not saying it's a bad turbo, it's just that all the split pistons and cracked head castings happened with 2260's which is a sure sign it's oversized, especially now these engines are getting pretty old and you can't fit forged pistons because no-one makes them.

Its from xmanturbo i think its a hybrid 1756 pd150 turbo. (Cant find the picture). 

 

Im probably over exaggerating mostly being used to the car. Its at 240hp/298ftlb. So im looking where to go next what to buy, the car is fun but id like a bit more out of it.

Sounds like you've been there done that ect. So long story short im pretty much done power wise before thing start getting broken, and the law of diminishing returns kicks in then ?.

I haven't done it, but the maths says the turbo is too big for the PD, it simply doesn't have enough valve area to flow enough gas to drive it properly, it works much better on the later 2.0 16V engines.

I'll keep looking for other options. You think anything above a 1756 size wise is gonna be too laggy?. I really dont want more lag and an even smaller power band.

I don't think the GTB2260 is to big, I think it is all down to the mapping.

 

When 2 or 3 of the regulars on here broke pistons there was some investigation done into it, the conclusion was SOI to early when using std injectors causing excessive cylinder pressure.

 

If you search there is a thread on this forum all about it.

 

When I had my GTB mapped (by Narco) I did logs and found the SOI was too advanced (going by the results of the investigations) and so I had it remapped again by someone who was a bit more professional which included using a safe SOI.

Bigger turbo means slower spool and more lag by definition, a bigger wheel takes more energy to turn it and there's only more energy available at higher RPM unless you can increase gasflow through the cylinder head.

It's a function of the high RPM needed to generate sufficient gasflow, because diesel burns much more slowly than petrol you have to light it earlier, that's controlled by SOI, think of it like ignition advance, the higher the engine speed the more advance is needed but you simply cannot make a diesel engine rev like a petrol.

You can fit huge turbos to diesel tractor engines because they're unburstable but the VW PD is certainly not, the pistons are cast and they split with the high temperatures and pressures generated in an overboosted engine.

Not really a daily driver then.
