Oil specification query

Featured Replies

Hi all, im posting here because you're all really helpful and the Ford forum i tried was as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

I have a 2016 S-Max with the 2.0 TDCI 180 PS engine. It needs an oil top up, but I only have the oil for the old Octavia (2013 CR 140). Handbook and oil photos attached, is the 5W-30 that dissimilar to the 0W-30 recommended? Could I use it for a top up before the service that's due soon?

Thanks,

Sam

Based on the wording in the manual, you shouldn't use it as it doesn't meet either requirement (ACEA A5/B5 and 0w30) needed for your engine.

The 5w30 will be slightly thicker than the 0w30 but if you're only using a small amount, then it'll probably make very little difference. Not too sure about mixing the ACEA specs though.

Personally, I'd be ordering the correct oil and waiting for it to arrive before topping up.

I know this thread is a few months old.

If you look at the attached file and compare the properties of different oils you can see that an A5 oil is an A3 oil with improved viscosity - added A1 - properties to make it more fuel efficient, i.e. less viscous at lower temperatures.

If you use the "recommended" Ford oil and add some of the old, left over Octavia oil your engine will be fine. 0W30 and 5W30 only differ in the fact that the 0W30 is less viscous and there is less friction and better fuel efficiency again when the engine is cold.

I topped my Superb CFGB up with left over oil I used on the previous V70. The properties are not that different and even big franchised garages often have a contract with one oil supplier and fill your car up with something similar rather than the exact spec oil.

This was an UK / EU requirement in the early 2000s to reduce fleet consumption.
