Random long term trip reset and 1.5TSi MPG

Recommended Posts

MY18 1.5Tsi Octavia SE - I've noticed this happen a few times before and reading the forums have seen others have the same issue. My long term reset a couple of days ago - it may have co-incided with the volume refusing to go up or down on the MP3s I was playing and just had the picture of the little mans head with the volume you get when turning up or down the traffic announcements ...

Interestingly the long term data has been reset but not the data from last filling the car. Not bad MPG either - this lockdown really helps with the MPG and I managed 70.5MPG a couple of days ago until the last mile in to work where every traffic light was against me - still managed 68.7 for the 12 mile trip though.

I'll get a better idea of the real MPG this morning though as I'll be filling the tank and doing some real calculations - I think my trip computer is being a tad optimistic but we'll see.

I can't remember the exact number off-hand but the Long Term will automatically reset after 2000 odd miles.  ( might be 2300 or 2400, as I say can't quite remember ).

Even allowing for a margin of error, that's outstanding mpg from any petrol engine let alone a 1.5 turbo.  57 over 400 miles - wow.

My cars mpg plummeted after the software update the garage did on it last year, at best it might manage high 40's mpg now maybe just into the low 50's mpg but never 57mpg! In normal day to day running it is more like low 40's mpg driving carefully.

So I refuelled (with 200 indicated miles left in the tank).

404 miles driven with the car reporting 56.8mpg. Topped the tank up to second click (as usual) and it took 33.27 litres which makes it a real mpg of 55.2mpg which isn't a million miles away from the indicated (about 3% under).

Quite pleased with that - I tend to pootle along at 56-60mph on the 9 miles of dual carriageway on the way to work and back and there is 3 miles of town driving on the way in but either a fast ring road (6 miles) on the way back or back through town if I'm on a late and it is quiet.

It would be interesting to get the car on the rollers at work and run it through a WLTP cycle before the software update is done on mine and see if it makes a big difference.

Why on earth would you get the software update with the consumption you are getting?

You do know the long term consumption updates after 99 hours or 9999 km or miles.

So only about 3600 miles at your 36 mph average before zeroing.

Each of the three displays; trip, tank and long term can be reset manually and individually.

I've got the kangarooing problem when the car is warming up. This is a pain as I kangaroo out of the work car park (not good for a company that specialise in engine build and testing) and then for the first 10 minutes or so while I'm stuck in traffic fight with the car.

It isn't an issue at the moment as with the lockdown the traffic is a lot lighter but try 20-30 minutes of stop start crawling traffic and you soon get tired of the car.

All 3 of my consumption stats reset now every time I start the car and today after 2 miles EPC light came on. The car hadn't been run for several weeks. Car is 1.0tsi dsg.

My car was a bit rough pulling away in first gear when I first got it, just not smooth at all but on the open road it drove brilliantly and fuel economy and performance were both good. In my case the car had also conked out a few times when trying to pull away in first gear. Garage contacted me and said come along and get the new software fix and everything will be perfect...

Got the new software and they're only correct in part, yes it is much smoother in first gear compared to how it was but fuel economy is substantially worse  than before and the car doesn't feel quite the same performance wise either. Within a day of getting the car back it conked out completely after leaving a local car park, got around the corner onto main road, next thing car is coasting and I had to glide it into a bus stop and then re-start it again. Car hadn't stalled, it just stopped the engine as if it thought I was at traffic lights or a junction.

The first gear behaviour without the fix isn't great but post fix the car isn't as good either and your fuel economy will be dropping by around 10% at least. Garage not interested at all, I actually asked if the update could be reversed but they refused and said it couldn't be done. Maybe this engine would run better it was privately remapped for those who own their car outright; can't do that with mine as it's contract hire. I think the engine is far too complicated with the new gasoline particulate filter plus cylinder deactivation, stop/start technology and very tight emission standards, which VW are terrified of breaching after their cheat software being discovered in some diesel engines. I'd have been better off with the one litre petrol engine or the 1.6 diesel but the diesel was around £60 pcm extra, funnily enough I've seen loads of SE Technology Octavia's advertised secondhand with the 1.6 diesel engine; presumably ex hire cars.

Hello Dave, did you sort this problem out? My consumption stats also reset after every restart too. No EPC light though. Did you manage to sort the problem out?

Forgot to grab a picture of my mileage before I was furloughed a couple of weeks ago - was really hoping to hit the 600 mile mark  to the tank but hey ho.

I have a similar problem mine keeps resetting every day , generally no EPC light although I had one instance of this warning light on 3 months ago with no repeat occurrences

Going back to the OP’s question,  another thread recently answered it, with reference to the manual (yes! I’d asked the question so was guilty of not RTFM-ing). It resets the long term at 100 hours running.

After reading a few comments on this subject I have a suspicion it’s to do with fuel filler cap connection , I’m going to experiment and I’ll let people know.

Looking forward to your results david1602. I.ve tried everything I can think of... I did not know there even was a fuel filler cap connection?

Neither do I , but I read on the forum that they resolved the by filling the tank and doing a manual reset of the long term trip computer , neither of the individual actions solved the problem but the combination worked, I will try!

Ok. Would be grateful if you could keep us updated. I'd try myself, but filling my tank is a bit of a problem around here at the moment😏
