Car software/firmware updates.

Featured Replies

A quick question.

Am I entitled to all of the available updates for my car when it goes in for servicing and/or repair work?

I'm not quibbling about the cost of servicing, but surely they should be updating the cars software/firmwares as and when they become available as a matter of course.

I know there's a considerable number of updates available for the car as they appear in OBD11.

Cheers.

I assume you mean software other than the infotainment?

Many of the updates are used for repair rather than maintenance. i.e if a part is playing up they will look for an update to see if it helps.

The garage I use don't update unless absolutely necessary as mechanical issues are then easier to identify.

Skoda Main Dealer servicing used to say, 'Software updates and enhancements' as part of what was done.

That meant necessary Engine / Drive train ones, service campaign field actions.

Yep. I'm starting to think that many of the issues that I am having maybe down to software issues.

I know that they've changed one bit of software, because if I get out of the car with the engine running and pop a bag or jacket on the back seat it gets very tetchy about the key not present, whereas before it didn't mind if I did it or even into the boot.

I'm also wondering if the Sat Nav/Infotainment system issues could be resolved by a software update.

Would like to get hold of the infotainment system software and do it myself. I don't know why they don't let us do it, after all they let us do the maps. Just download it to a USB stick or SD card and let it get on with it.

I was always under the impression they would plug their laptop, diagnostic thingymajig or whatever, test all the systems and if they needed any of them could be upgraded, then they would be.

They will only do a software update to a module if there is an outstanding Service Campaign or if the owner reports a fault that Skoda have said will be cured by the update (and if the owner gives them LOTS of hassle) - updates for any other reason will not be done.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. I'm currently looking at a BMW Series 1, to replace this junkheap.

I had same concern few years ago. but apparently, they will never touch anything about car software even though they say it in their website. Once I asked them that why did they say software update in their service pack..they said they need to reset the service using their machine..thats what is software update..

Software updates for everything (Engine ECU, ABS, Gearbox, Headunit, ACC, etc etc) are only done by the dealer if it is "mandatory" or classed as a service action by VAG.

This is what they describe as "software updates & vehicle enhancements".

It is just clever wording to make you think you will get real-time updates for everything (like is becoming more common now since Tesla came along).

In reality its almost impossible to have a software update for free from the garage unless your complaint or fault is directly linked to a software update as a remedy.

I managed to convince my dealer to update the infotainment software (because of the MIB1 issue where it resets at each keyon) but it took me 4 visits to the dealer & 20 minutes in the car with a technician who had clearly witnessed the issue several times.

They offered (relucatantly) to do it because they accepted the behaviour was not right but said (as on previous visits) there were no improvements listed in their update database regarding these issues.

They were right, as after two new firmwares over my 7 years of ownership it still has not solved the problem.
