Possible engine swap from 1.4tdi to pd130

Featured Replies

Hi has anyone swapped out a 1.4tdi amf engine and replaced with the 1.9tdi asz engine. What parts would I need to make this possible? Any help would be appreciated

Don't build what you can buy.

Can't afford one, can get cheap enough engines etc. Plus I like mine just want more power

It's not just the engine, it's the gearbox, brakes, suspension etc.

Like Wino says, sell yours and buy a PD100, they remap to PD130 power easily and they're cheap.

I'd be looking at the engine with gear box, turbo,ECU. Also wiring loom. Brakes etc I'd look at doing shortly afterwards really

It's a terrible idea, yours will be off the road for weeks, you'll have issues coding all the electronics and that's assuming you have the tooling, facilities and skills to actually do it.

Trying to get as much advice as I can, I like my car don't particularly want to have to swap it but want more power ideally. Not sure why it's a terrible idea could be thinking of worse things to do

Buy a vrs they are only 2k for a rough one

seems a daft idea to do it to a 1.4tdi

I don't have 2k some people are lucky to have cash floating around if I had 2k I'd have plenty options

I was speaking to someone earlier who has done it and said this so obviously that's why I've asked on here

I bought a vRS a short time ago for £600. I don't see how you are going to do it for less than that.

You will need:

  • Engine (inc turbo etc.)
  • Engine wiring loom
  • Engine ECU (unlocked)
  • Gearbox
  • Driveshafts
  • Clutch pipe work
  • Flywheel
  • Clutch

And then to cope with the extra weight and power:

  • Suspension
  • Brake upgrade (at least to vRS spec, so hubs etc.

And then of course have modified car insurance, which may or may not work out for you.

Fair enough at least someone with a bit more input. I'm not sure on the weight difference overall on engines and parts etc. It was something I was considering as this car as been brilliant and can't fault it other than power really. I need a new clutch and few other bits so I was thinking with what I'd have to spend to put parts on if I could get a complete engine loom ECU and gearbox clutch and turbo for a couple hundred quid then it wasnt a mad idea but it sounds like it is from what everyone is saying

1 extra cylinder and a six speed gearbox over a 5, fair bit of weight difference.

I'll just put this right and remap it better than nothing, really don't want to get rid wish I had the space for more than one car oh well

Something I’ve thought of many times, but only as an "in my head " idea. But first step would be to upgrade brakes ( minimum front discs to VRS standard )and possibly  replace the rear ones with the VRS foot/hand brake combination.  Along with more rubber on the road to use the extra brake power. Only then would I look at upgrading the power. Possibly to 100bhp, if the engine and gearbox could handle it. Something for Tech1e to comment on.

Handling wise ,it's possibly got something on a 4 pot engine as the 3 pot is a lot lighter, meaning less mods to th front suspension.

Possibly you'd need a bit less ponies to get the same performance from a 3 pot car -again something for the likes of the Techie's etc to comment on in the power to weigh arguement.

As for wiring- I've got a fusebox layout of a MK1 with all possible fuses utilised. And another page showing what the fuses ( with values) are used for. My next project is to make a sheet particular to my 1.4TDI , with all unused positions in white. From a brief look at my photo of my fusebox, I'd say there will be a lot of white positions. So perhaps a new fusebox might be on the buy list, along with ( from comments at a dealer) a CPU to control all the extra electronics. When I mentioned that I  intended to fit central locking to mine, I was told that the add on computer was circa £400 .

Well you have cash floating around for an engine and whatever else you will need so you do have some money

I never said I had any cash floating around I was seeing if anyone had done the engine swap and what work had gone into it. Too pick up a engine and gearbox for couple hundred quid is a bit different from £2k. I will keep my car as it is going off how much work will needed to be done and replace parts what are needing replacing, then go for a remap

If you really want more power put what you have aside and drive with sympathy and in a couple months sell the car and add to it the money you already have / have accumulated.

do not throw good money after bad 👍

I don't particularly want to get rid love my car can't fault it. It's done 230k miles just want more power

Would not even contemplate mapping a 230k mile engine.

Any particular reason why before done it will have a new clutch timing belt pump etc before I go down the path. I've had a Saab diesel barely run in in the past that manage 2 blow 2 turbos with a safe map and it was nowhere near as reliable as this.

Mapping up a 1.4 Tdi to 100bhp at 230k miles will lead to disaster ! Then you will be out £500 to get the engine and or turbo fixed !

It will cost you the same as buying a vRS outright

Do you know of anybody with a standard vRS that would let you take it for a spin just to let you see what can be had for £600. Get a spin in one and you will see what even a standard one is like !

You like your wee car but you will end up hating it after all the work and effort you will put in - remember you will never get the  money you shell out on mods back again so whatever budget you have for this project put along with your car will easily see you in a vRS !

Hi, no I don't know anyone with one, the car only cost me a couple hundred in first place so if everything did go bang after several months, scrap value would mean I wouldn't loose much. I'd take my alloys off my bed seats which are like new so not at a major loss and for how good it's been this car has put me in massive profit through work previously so not loosing out.

Best not to bite the hand that feeds you then 👍

It no longer feeds profit but has made its worth many times over, so no worries with that side of it. Just wanting to remap as earlier discussed a engine swap would require a lot of work however putting parts which are perishable right then increasing power to a stable amount shouldn't be a problem after all these engines are supposed to be good and I'm confident this engine is
