New buyers guide

Right then, its been decided that we're to have a new Octy vRS in the new year or as soon as is humanly possible...

My plan was to go to the local dealer (in this case Bilston) with the old R19 16v and a wedge in my back pocket and see what sort of deal they can do me.

What i wanted to know is...

Is there a "best" time to go i.e. end of month ?

Should i be haggling for a drop in the OTR price's before say trying to get extra's like parking sensors ?

Has anyone else part ex'd a non Skoda with a dealer ?

The 19's not worth a lot now anyway but would i be better trying to shift it privately ? the thing is i dont want it lying around once i get the Octy so was kind of leaning towards the part chop, what sort of prices have you guys paid for new cars from dealers with or without something to chop in ?

I promise i'll start posting something worth while once i get one, but for now please bare with while i get myself up to speed...

Yup, I traded a Laguna in for the vRS. All the dealer did was look up the value in parkers and offered me the bare minimum due to the excessive milage it had. As that wasn't a great offer he then dropped the price of the vRS with

the 19's got a fair old mileage now too so i guess i'll be in the same boat problem is i cant really afford to keep it once i get the vRS and there isnt really the space for it to wait for a private sale.

To be fair it doesnt really owe me anything and i'm not really bothered about loosing money on it cause i cant see the point in getting worked up about things i cant do anything about.

I was planning the same sort of action you did, walk in tell them what i want and what i've got to give them and see what happens, hopefully get the parking sensors thrown in at the same time.

The vRS comes with plenty of goodies for me anyway but i've read a few times on here the parking sensors are a valuable investment (not that theres anything wrong with my parking you understand)...

Would you think 14K + my old car would be a good guesstimate for a new vRS in silver with parking sensors ???

That leaves me a grand from the overall budget for insurance (quoted

There's only one way of finding out... Talk to the dealer :D

And if he doesn't play ball, go to the next one... or the next.

Someone out there should bite, especially if you catch them at the right time and they need to make a sale to keep up the figures.

I exchanged a Renault Scenic and got top book for it (Parkers). Dealers are looking at all the benefits, don't forget they have you tied into Skoda servicing for 3 years so they can afford to sweeten the deal to change marques.

What car guide price for the Octy seemed about right when I surveyed dealers. I the end I got a 2003 demonstrator Vrs and I'm still grinning

Be careful of the New Reg rush in March, they will be selling cars with no probs then, so discounts will be harder to get. If you want a 04 plate, leave it until a few weeks after March 1st ;)

Get some prices from online brokers and push for a matching deal, or get the extras thrown in free.

I got an Octy vRS last May for

Well said that man ! :D

I got vRS metallic, parking sensors, thatcham cat 1, full tank for

Excellent !

Thanks for the advice... i basically wanted to know what you guys had done as i've never bought a new car from a main dealers before and i wanted to get the best deal.

Parking sensors arent something i've needed in the past and i guess if it came down to it i'd be swayed by the delivery date.

There are a few dealers local to me (walsall) so i'll spend a weekend going round haggling them down

Thanks again !

If I was buying again, Id definately get cruise...

Specs cameras sprouting up everywhere...

And saving on fuel bills would prob pay for it in a couple of years easily.

Jono, contact BigK regarding retro-fit cruise, i'll be giving him a shout myself sometime after :xmas: :)

9. Be prepared to walk off.

And then do so. I've found that dealers won't budge beyond a certain offer.

It all depends on the individual dealer. If you happen to find one who is sure to shift your old motor fairly quickly, he will give you a good price straightaway and you won't waste time doing a deal. I part-exchanged a Subaru Legacy this time, and my dealer got on the phone to a car broker, who offered a really good price. The dealer topped that with another small amount to round things off, and in the end it was the same as the best price I got at a Subaru dealership!

Other dealers starting with a meagre offer never entered into that region, although I could haggle quite an amount towards it. The fact is that they saw the Legacy as a difficult car while my eventual dealer knew how to get rid of it quickly and offered accordingly.

Nigel,

Pretty much as per above, also keep your eyes peeled in the autoexchange website, I found mine (a 6mth 4x4 @7k miles - 11KGBP) it was in better condition than the demo at the local garage, amazing.

The new reviews section lists dealers by county, so you can "call" the locals then expand, the UK is not that big and what better way to celebrate a new car than say a 100 mile drive from the wirral back to the midlands on the A roads :D

re Insurance, try Liverpool victoria, far far cheaper for a few than big names, it's hit and miss but there policy is less than direct line where demanding from me for my excess, fairly obvious that I changed mid policy...if that fails, try the discounts section for insurance co's we now will try and do somthing aswell.

Also in that section are two dealers, pretty much local to the creators of the site; others exist. But they might be able to do you a deal; that you can at least hold up against a local dealer, either realyl are going to give you book on your trade in, so it's car and deal you can strike up.

For example, the dealer where my car comes from, hold a saturday car wash, regardless of the fact my car has changed hands; I could roll up there each saturday for a free wash...so far it's the only one know who does, shame I'm not free to take them up..

Anyway hope you get your mind set and the drive you deserve :D

Thanks again for the cracking advise peeps.

At least i have "some" know how when approaching the dealers now and i'll keep em peeled for the exchange and traders for good deals.

As for insurance i've been ringing round the usual suspects and so far Tesco's has been the cheapest at

Might be worth finding a local garage that specialises in second hand cars of the type youre going to ditch.

Get them to guarantee a price they will give the skoda dealer for it, then the dealer had minimal hassle shifting it, and a guaranteed price without having to spend ages getting peed off phoning around.

Worked a treat when my colleague bought his scoob.

Got a honda dealer to guarantee a price for his old car, minimal hassle and haggling involved.

hi

if its any help I've just ordered a Vrs estate in black magic with cruise , parking sensors and the paint/interior treatment for....

It maybe an idea to get a price for part exchanging you 19 and if you have no part exchange.

If you get a rough delivery date for the car then you could try to sell your 19 in the mean time but keep hold of it until you have the vRS. Thats what i did when i sold my 5.

I'm sure somebody off the RSC would have it.

I do miss not having heated discussions with the Renault service manager :argue: about the quality of my Clio.
