Manual gearbox changing on its own when accelerating

Featured Replies

Hope someone can advise....

over the last week my Manual 2012 Octavia has started to select the gear below when I accelerate in gear. For example if I’m in 4th, when I accelerate the computer will show a gear change to 3rd but I will have the gear stick in 4th.

This is the same for all gears, so in 5th the acceleration will mean the computer will select 4th and so on.

the computer does recognise that it has done this and change back but obviously the issue causes the RPM to increase.

no warning lights on the dash.

anyone had anything similar?

thanks in advance

Maybe the computer is telling you what gear you should be in.................

I never knew a manual had a digital indicator of what gear the car / gearbox was in

Some cars have an optimum gear change indicator, which flicks on to prompt you to change gear. It may be for economy, sportier driving, etc but is just a guide. Perhaps this is what the car is telling you... You may be labouring the engine and not in the optimum gear for the driving speed/style.

I would suggest you swat up a little on the owners manual to see if this is just a guide/prompt from the car, before worrying too much. Modern ECU's often also adjust themselves to recognise certain driving characteristics so as to be more responsive and in tune with the driver. This often gets "Lost" And will reset after a few hundred miles, if the battery/electrical power has been disrupted.

Just for clarification, this is a manual, and not a semi-automatice or similar?  I am unfamiliar with Octavia's per-se, but a fully manual gearbox will have a proper clutch. You can have what seems like a manual gearbox but will require no clutch pedal... This is still classed as an automatic.

Very common on newer cars.

Indicator in the top right hand corner of the MFD. Multi Function Display.

It will also indicate when to change up a gear ( or two ) to help with fuel consumption.

A hard acceleration is more likely to indicate a lower gear is better.

A lighter throttle application might not indicate a lower gear is wanted.

This can also change depending whether your are going uphill, downhill or on the flat.

Thanks AG Falco

On a mk2 Octy tho????????

L&K by any chance??????or wrong sub forum???

Silly Topic title, either way...........

It's not super clear but that reads like the OP has a slipping clutch.

That would cause the RPM to increase and the gear indicator to show a lower gear.

As these cars only have a reverse sensor, the forward gears are worked out from the RPM/road speed ratio.

Oooh thats very smart, I take my hat off to you Langers.

I was going to say the same as the others regarding the display telling you to change gear but clutch slip is very likely especially if its more evident in the higher gears.

Could the OP perhaps be slighly hard of hearing? I know when I was young my Grandad complained of a lack of power on his split screen camper, my uncle drove it and said the clutch was slipping, being the young grease monkey that I was I replaced the clutch but found it hard to understand how someone who could hold a normal conversation with me could not hear or feel clutch slip, he was a good engineer & mechanic.

Now in my 60's I'm beginning to be aware of my own hearing loss.

Regarding the display, if it says 4-5 then its suggesting you should change from 4th to 5th, if it says 5-4 then its suggesting you change down, if it shows 5 then it believes from its calculations that you are in 5th gear, if it shows 4 then it believes you are in 4th, clutch slip in 5th would indeed cause the display to show 4.

I no longer look at mine as it drives me mad!!!

I have binned off the indicators deciding how many times they are going to flash, I wish I could be read of the thing telling me to change gear and of having to declutch to start the engine.

Thanks for the contributions.

sounds like slipping clutch would be the most likely issue.

Just to clarify, the 2012 Mk2 Skoda Octavia Estate 62 plate is a full manual. It does have cruise control, don’t know if this means that the cars computer has an automatic function.

the fault occurs when I am driving steadily in a gear but need to make a manoeuvre so accelerate, if I’m driving in fourth when I accelerate the computer reading will drop down to 3rd and the engine will sound and the car will accelerate like I have dropped a gear. However, the gear stick will remain in 4th and I will not have touched the clutch pedal.

thanks again for the advice

Yup - that's definitely the clutch slipping.

Only the driver can change gears on a manual gearbox. Cruise control just adjusts the throttle to keep at the set speed, it won't change gears :)

I think I am overlooking something  (or covid driving me mad)  but if the car accelerates normally, is it not computer related rather than clutch slip????

Clutch slip should be easy to detect.
