Quiet tyres

Featured Replies

Just booked my Skoda superb into have the B pillars soundproofed (thank you to dogfish for the advise and video clip)

i've already done the boot including the tyre well and rear wings .

I need to identify some quite tyres to complete the job.

The idea is to replace the factory fitted rear tyres.

I have so far been able to find Hankook tyres 67 db priced at £125 + vat each

Can anyone here recommend anything better/cheaper but moor importantly quieter?

Thank you

What is the standard tyre size for your car and then someone can help you from their experiences?:) eg, 235/40R19 Sportline size.

Debica do some low rated (67db) UHP tyres. I have Goodyear Efficient Grips @68db but only 225 wide

Debica? never heard of those? where would I find them?

Thank you

Here you go and here too...

They seem to be 68bd?

The Hankook are listed as 67bd

Right, I didn’t look.

One thing to remember is that these sound measurements are for the roar generated at the kerbside, not inside the car, so these shouldn’t be used as an expectation of the noise level transmitted into the cabin.

I understand that it's the BD noise is heard  from  the outside of the car however I reasoned that the less noise outside would also mean the less noise would be heard inside?

The tyres I have fitted are pirelli cinturato p7 and are rated at 70db.

There is nothing wrong with them (loads of life in them, I am only changing them because of the noise.

Should I go ahead? at a cost of £300 fitted, is it worth changing them or should I wait for the B pillars to be done and see how it goes?

There's more choice in the 245/45R18 size than the less common 235/45R18 size.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3
245/45 R18 100Y XL J

Euro Label B A 67dB

This particular model of the Asymmetric 3 was fitted as original equipment to a Jaguar (hence the "J" designation in the title). Going by the 67dB rating, Jaguar wanted a quiet tyre. It's available from mytyres, oponeo, blackcircles, autodoc, and many other places. The Asymmetric 3 isn't the latest model, the noisier but also highly rated Asymmetric 5 replaced it.

Check the Euro label carefully before ordering. If it's not B A 67dB, it's not this special Jaguar model of the Asymmetric 3, and one of the many other models of the Asymmetric 3. The other Asymmetric 3 models are noisier than 67dB.

Dunlop SportMaxx RT2 are the quietest tyres I’ve ever had, and believe me I tried all sorts on my last car.

Only downside is that they do get louder when you get down to about 2.5mm but I treated that like a wear indicator tbh

The tyres I have fitted are 235, can I replace them with 245 using the same rim?

If so I will order the tyres recommended by Carlston

I think my rims are 8 inch?

According to this chart I would be at my maximum, would this be a problem?

I’d stick with what’s recommended tbh, 10mm isn’t going to do anything apart from increase the area where road noise comes from? That’s my thinking anyway 😆

I can get a much quieter tyre but it is only available in a 245, I just need to know will it fit.

7,5 205 215 or 225 235
8,0 215 225 or 235 245

The normal rim size for a 245/45 tyre is 8J. The fit is just like a 205/45 on a 7J rim and a 225/45 on a 7.5J rim. You could also fit a 245/45 tyre to a 7.5J rim. 8J is not narrow for a 245/45 tyre.

The chart above is simplistic and in many cases wrong. The rim width depends on both the tyre width and its aspect ratio. For example, a 205/70 tyre can be fitted to a 5J rim and 205/50, 205/55, 205/60, 205/65 can be fitted to a 5.5J rim and 205/45 can be fitted to a 6.5J rim.

Fit my 2017 Superb?

Fit my 2017 Superb?

If you have 7.5J or 8J rims, that tyre size will fit, ie. 245/45R18 fits 7.5J and 8J rims.

This Skoda online parts catalogue show three styles of OEM 18" alloy rims for the Superb MK3 with a specification of 7.5Jx18 ET46

http://www.oemepc.com/skoda/part_single/catalog/sk/markt/CZ/modell/SUP/year/2016/drive_standart/768/hg_ug/601/subcategory/601080/part_id/2543668/lang/e

This link shows two other styles of 18" alloy rims for the Superb MK 3 with a specification of 8Jx18 ET44

https://www.skoda-parts.com/catalog/superb-3/spare-parts/accessories/wheels-steel-aluminium/aluminium-wheel-578.html

So the OEM 18" alloy rims for the Superb MK3 appear to be either 7.5J or 8J.

Here's a link to the Goodyear website in the US, which shows that a 245/45R18 tyre can be fitted to a rim between 7.5J and 9J. Scroll down to near the bottom of the page where it says:

Tire Size 245/45R18

Approved Rim Width (in.) 7.5-9.0

 https://www.goodyear.com/en-US/tires/eagle-f1-asymmetric-all-season

The Goodyear website in the UK doesn't appear to show recommended rim widths, hence the link to the US version instead.

I swapped out the noisy p7's on my wife's car (front). For Debica Presta UHP, they are much quieter but are almost shot after two years, worn and perishing, where's as the p7's (rear) that can with the car are only 50% worn after 4 years.

P7s are really hard so they wear slowly and cause lots of noise. They’re also terrible in my opinion but the absolute worst tyres for the money are Continentals - they are awful in every way
