Spare wheel

Featured Replies

Just bought 2017 Fabia and prefer spare wheel to saver. Will 215/45 R16 fit in boot without lifting cover?

Unlikely. The only normal option is for a spacesaver. I believe you can buy them as a kit with the insert thst holds the jack, etc.

@PhilMacInnes  Welcome.

You want to check that you can get all the wheels off if you get a puncture so you might as well take a wheel off and try it in the spare tyre well.

As it is the wheel off the car might need carried in the spare tyre well if the car and boot are full.

Needs to go in with the tyre inflated or with some air out...

Our car didn't originally come with a spare, so we asked our dealer to fit one when we bought it. This is what we got. When I swapped wheels around (front to back), I didn't check if one would go in the wheel well.

There are spacesavers, and there are spacesavers. Some are special thin but very high pressure tyres. Others are just an ordinary wheel and tyre, but not os the spec for your car, but maybe for a lower model. Either way there is a speed limit when one is fitted either because the first type is so thin it is risky in it's own right, or for the second type the mismatch presents a risk. All the spacesavers I've had are the second type (Superb and 3x Furbies), perfectly OK wheel and tyre for the car, but limited when mixed with the standard wheels and tyres.

I'd prefer to have a spare like the one in the picture than a skinny space saver, you could drive a lot more miles with that on as a spare though still be limited to a lower speed - though I've forgotten the actual speed limit.

Any width bigger than that would raise the carpet, that is what my wife's 2015 Polo came with and the wheel/tyre size her winter wheel/tyres are.

Maybe as good as it gets spare wheel wise for Fabia/Polo/Ibiza of that age.

Edit:- a very good tip wrt "check that you can remove all the wheels"!

I would say yes.

Photos of a 185 60 15 on a alloy in my boot.

The limiting factor for me is the tool kit, not the tyre/wheel width.

Agree with AGFalco. I obtained a matching 15" alloy wheel off Ebay, as we had no spare, the wheel, fits the well, but the polystyrene moulding that holds the tools tends to raise the  boot floor carpet. Ours doesn't have a solid boot floor so its not an issue.
