Suspension

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m new to this forum.

Just got a 2019 Superb estate sel exec. Only had it three days. I love most aspects of the car but the suspension is driving me mad. I’ve come to this car from a Golf estate. The Superb just seems never to settle under any conditions. Any bump or pot hole seems to send it rocking from side to side and takes what seems like ages to subside.

On a motorway although it never feels unstable, there is just constant lateral movement which I’m struggling to get used to, and which makes my wife feel car sick.

Also on a motorway, although engine noise and wind noise are minimal, there is a lot of tyre roar, (seems deafening after the golf). It’s got 18 inch wheels with what I imagine are original Continental tyres, as it’s only covered 10k.

Would love to know if anyone has experienced similar issues, and if any remedies can be suggested.

                  Gary.

You don't say what engine/gearbox you have but the 15mm lower Sportline models have a better suspension set up but there is still a bit of secondary bounce for me over railway lines but it is stable at high sppeds and not car sick inducing. Ride is better than my previous Octavia Vrs245 that ran on standard Pirelli P Zero 225/35R19 tyres. Sportlines have larger wheels with 235/40R19 Bridgestone S001 in my case (272 hatch) and perhaps the 4WD models like mine have better balance/handling compared to say a diesel front wheel drive model. The solution according to a few on here is to fit a bigger 24/25mm RARB (sway bar) either Eibach or H & R with say 25mm lowering springs (again Eibach or H & R) fitted to the original dampers which don't seem to be the problem but the soft springd being the main culprit.:hi: Welcome to Briskoda BTW.

Many thanks for that quick response, it’s a 1.5 tsi Dsg. I deliberately avoided the sportline, as a couple of reviews I read suggested it rode too firmly, but I’m now thinking I should have test driven  one to try it.

It’s a Skoda approved used so I’ve just been reading the benefits and it seems to say there is a 30 day exchange policy, so I may have to consider that if my wife can’t get used to it.

I once used the 30 day exchange many years ago when I didn't get on with a Mk1 Superb. If you can test drive a Sportline soon make sure you take it on a decent motorway run with the wife alongside to get her second opinion. If you use the same dealer you bought the 1.5TSi from (we have the same engine in our 2018 Karoq and it is very fuel efficient) they may not mind you changing the car for one that is slightly more expensive than the one you bought. The leather SEL seats look very nice but are not as comfortable as the high backed sports seats in the Sportline IMHO but bear in mind only  the driver's side is electric on Sportline models whereas the passenger front seat is manual which you need to check with SWMBO to see if she has enough adjustment. My wife is tall at 5 feet 10 inches so we have similar driving positions. Good luck either way with your decision.:whew:

Quick update, had to exchange this car. The dealer replaced the rear shock absorbers, even though there was nothing visibly wrong with them, but the issue remained, (in my head at least).

The dealer (Mitchell Skoda Cheshire Oaks) have been brilliant. I’ve now got a new S el hatchback on order, hopefully arriving mid October. Fingers crossed it rides better than the estate. I’ve test driven several Superb hatchbacks and they seem much better than the estates in this regard. Has anyone else experienced this difference ?

Maybe the hatch and estate use the same dampers. Would explain a greater movement with the added weight of the rear end.

Good luck with the new car. They certainly looked after you.

Who in their right mind reviews a Superb and calls the Sportline's suspension "firm" is beyond me. Even a Sportline with DCC in Sport which is the "firmer" option available is never crashy or tiring, it just controls the body better.

That been said, on non-DCC cars, a shock upgrade to Koni Sports on stock springs has been reported to provide great results with a significantly less bouncy ride while remaining just as comfortable, and at quite reasonable cost.

I think the superb estate is to firm with DCC in sport (L&K), maybe it's less body roll but my mho is that is looses control over the wheels when in Sport. Using Normal mode on twisty uneven road improves the actual handling even though there's more body roll.

I'm also a person that thinks the Volvo XC70 (standard chassis) is quite stiff :)
