Instrument gauges working but pointers not lit

Featured Replies

Octavia 2010 TDi estate. When lights are on, the needles on the oil temp gauge and the fuel gauge are not lit (bottom left and bottom right of thre dash display). All gauges are working and lit, the needles on other gauges are lit, but but not on the two lower gauges. No idea where to start to fix this. is it a fuse? And how are these needles lit?

If you had said all didn't illuminate I would have suggested the dimmer control was at fault but since it is localised I'm going to suggest it's a failed solder join/LED on the PCB necessitating instrument cluster out to fix.

Try thumping the dashboard above the instruments.

Thanks MicMac. I fiddled with the dimmer first, no good. And I've alreday thumped it. No good.

I don't like the sound of the instrument cluster coming out. Big job? Where is that located?

Do the needles light from their centres, and what sort of light (LED?) is it?

Search on the tube for more info, don't be model specific, you'll get the gist from watching any make/modern model being fixed.  I say modern as not so long ago instrument clusters had owner replaceable incandescent bulbs at the rear.

You'll probably just need to redo the lead free solder joins and/or replace an LED or two.

Thanks MicMac. I'll look around but I fear this may end in financial tears (or inaction).

There's a guide here:

It should at least give you an idea of whats involved :)

Well done for finding this, thank you. But looking at the procedure scares me. That looks like very skilled work - and there msut be a risk for a rank amateur like me of making an error elsewhere on the PCB and ending up with no intruments working on the display.  What a pity it can't jsut be a loose wire...Guess I'm stuck with the problem.

But many thanks for the help. Someone will benefit from it no doubt.

There are companies that will repair your instrument panel, one in particular in your area that was mentioned on here. Make a few searches or perhaps someone will come back here with a link.

Not important, but,

Is it not the 'Coolant temp gauge and fuel gauge' that are not working, or do you actually have an oil temp gauge?

Thank you. I found two possibles - one in Byfleet, one in West Horsley. Am I getting close?

Roottoot - yes, temp gauage it is. My error, I knew I had made it. I was confusing it with the oil temperature which comes up as an option on the MFD screen.

The gauges work, but the lights have gone out on the two needles.

Rings a bell; ask them both if they have fixed a fault like yours - leds on Octavia 2 instrument panel.
