2016 L&K Yeti touchscreen (Admunsen?) issue

Featured Replies

Hi,

I bought the yeti 2nd hand just before lockdown and all was fine. Last week (on the first couple of miles of a 630 miles journey - typical) the infotainment head unit started playing up. To start with lots of random touchscreen virtual buttons pressed with physical fingers nowhere near the unit (it kept ringing one person whose details were right in the middle of the screen); the physical buttons around the edge stopped responding and judging by the green outline it thought someone had their finger permanently on a part of the screen.

It has now settled down so everything works apart from the far left hand 'column' of the touchscreen (1/4 of  the screen in a vertical column on the far left hand side) which remains totally unresponsive. Which makes the whole thing virtually useless.

I've rebooted it with engine off and on countless times.

I've cleaned it carefully with window cleaners and let it evaporate

I've left the car alone to think about what it's done

We've had stern words

Nothing has worked.....so I fear next stop is a trip to a Skoda garage which I can't see ending well (save a huge bill for a new head unit).

Any other tips and trick to try first? I have no warranty left to fall back on. I was thinking about getting a can on compressed air and squirting it around under the bezel to see if there is anything lodged in ther but must admit I'm unsure of the tech used for the touch element - if I approach with my finger from the left it does not 'see' me coming - around the rest of the screen it responds before your finger touches the screen).

Many thanks.

Despite switching the radio and ignition off there is still power supplied to the unit. You could try removing the fuse in the engine compartment - near the battery - which will totally isolate the radio. Leave fuse out for a couple of minutes then replace and see if that works. I think it's fuse 4 but PLEASE check as I could be wrong. I had a similar problem to you and sadly nothing worked and head unit had to replaced at £1,000 plus but mine was under warranty.

Worth trying for contribution from Skoda if worst happens but hopefully total reboot might work.

Great - thanks so much. It's worth a try.

Yes - will be very annoying if I end up paying £1K for a new head unit on a 4yr and 3 month old vehicle. 😞

As more than one fuse to the radio disconnecting the battery for half a minute is a better option.
The recent miles on the trip will be lost but everything else should settle down after a short drive.

Yes, that’s as option. Skoda dealer during lockdown suggested removing the main radio fuse as a last ditch try. Didn’t work for me so I was without a radio until end of lockdown but Dealer was excellent as they fast tracked a replacement and fitted while I waited. Don’t know if ben_highlands has Smartlink but if he needs new radio don’t forget to tell dealer before they remove radio so they can order the Smartlink with the radio. Otherwise he will have to prove to Skoda that radio had Smartlink for them to supply one foc.

You might get away with just a replacement touchscreen. I can't recall if I have any in the workshop, but it's a possibility and will certainly be cheaper than a new unit.

We had a similar issue with the Coloumbus in our Yeti.

It started when my with was washing her hands with alcohol gel and some of it splashed onto the screen.

Fixed it in the end by using the corner of one of those blister packets Paracetemol comes in to clean under the bezel around the edge of the stereo. A fair bit of dust came out, must have dislodged whatever liquid caused the button to think it was being pressed.

I have the same issue with my 2016 Yeti 5L0035680. There are two "columns" down the screen that do not respond to touch at all and the other areas that do work are intermittent as though other parts of the screen are being registered as pressed at the same time. I have taken the unit it and thoroughly cleaned around it and checked connections but still the problem persists. @Rustynuts you mentioned replacement touchscreens. I'm sure this would solve my issue. Do you know what the part number is for a replacement screen for my unit (picture attached) which I believe is 5L0035680 and where I can get one?

Ah, the screen in your unit is one which I've not found a cheap supplier for I'm afraid. But it's some time since I checked, I'll have another look this afternoon.

Looks like we do have the same issue with the same model :-( I never found a solution. So, I too would be interested in a cheaper that main agent replacement.

A quick search leads me to a best price (to me) of £220, and the possibility of incurring customs and VAT on top of that. That's for a new screen to buy only, fitting would be extra.

I'm still looking, but unfortunately these screens are hellish expensive for some reason.

Thanks @Rustynuts. Is that just for the screen, the front panel or the entire unit? My understanding was that the panel can be swapped without coding but a new unit can't. If just the screen, what is involved with the fitting of it into the front panel? From what I could see when I popped the front panel off my unit was that it was some small ribbon connectors to attach. Is the fitting something that you do?

I think you're confusing the Amundsen & Columbus MIB1 & MIB2 units with your Amundsen 2 unit. The first two have a brain unit in the glove box and a loom which connects to the screen unit in the dash. On those the whole screen unit is separate and can be swapped with no issues. In your unit it's a one piece traditional style setup and the screen panel isn't available as a standalone part, unless sourced from a scrap unit.

If I could get the screen at a reasonable cost then yes I'd fit it.

Ah, understood. I appreciate the advice, thank you.

I've popped the radio out again and this time disconnected the screen units ribbon cables.

From the rear of the touchscreen unit, the QR code stuck to it scans as:

1740633000309.TDO-WVGA0633F00039.20151023.3610L

From how the part number is etched into the rear of the screen, I believe the part number is TDO-WVGA0633F00039. Presumably the 20151023.3610L is the date of manufacture (my Yeti is a 2016 model) and the preceding series of digits is a manufacturer reference number of some kind.

The best price I can find for a replacement TDO-WVGA0633F00039 is with AliExpress.com. lasertrader.de also appear to stock the part but for a slightly higher cost. I think I'd rather order from Germany though to avoid customs issues so may go for that one.

I have also noticed that TDO-WVGA0633F00045 is available from some suppliers cheaper but is an AMOLED screen. From what I can see spec wise, it is essentially an AMOLED version of the same screen. The fittings certainly appear the same. Could I not replace my faulty TDO-WVGA0633F00039 touchscreen unit with a TDO-WVGA0633F00045 and gain the benefit of a better price and a true black AMOLED screen?

Having removed the old screen to get the unit part number, I am comfortable in fitting the replacement screen myself.

Yeah, you're right about the part number. But I can't find a TDO-WVGA0633F00045 for any less than the original, and I'm not sure of the fitment issues, other than on ebay germany where there's a seller who breaks old units and sells them in bits, saying they're "New - Other". 😉

It was a German eBay seller that I was looking at with the cheaper prices so will be the same one you refer to. I wrongly assumed they were a more reliable business source as they had several items listed of different parts and all as new.  I ordered a part a few minutes before your post. Fingers crossed it is fully functional 🤔 I'll update this thread with however it pans out.

Thanks again for all your your help. Hopefully the part numbers listed will be useful to @ben_highlands solving their issue too.

I can supply screens for a lot of the new MIB stuff from stock, but the one you want has always been silly money.

I received the new screen part TDO-WVGA0633F00045 this evening from the seller pandzior (from Poland) on eBay.de. It arrived quickly (ordered 30th August) and well packaged in a reused box and well padded with paper and bubble wrap. Even if not a new item, it certainly appears in perfect undamaged condition. Since I'd previously dismantled my Skoda Yeti 2016's head unit (5L0035680C) to get the screen part number (which was TDO-WVGA0633F00039), fitting the new screen (TDO-WVGA0633F00045) was a simple task. It works perfectly. For £121.21 delivered it was bit of a bargain when compared to other prices for the same screen (both TDO-WVGA0633F00039 and TDO-WVGA0633F00045).

Perhaps I have been a bit fortunate, I don't know, but I'm very happy with the outcome. Hopefully these model number details help others fix their head units too. For me, the issue was that parts of the screen were not working (two columns down the screen) and the radio acting as though it was being repeatedly pressed when it wasn't (which seemed worse when damp conditions). I had tried updating to the latest firmware, removing the radio and screen and thoroughly cleaning and also removing engine bay fuse F8 for the infotainment system.

Good luck everyone with the same faults. And thanks again Rustynuts for the helpful advice and pab567 on another thread for the radio firmware.

Well, from what I can see we have the same issue and model numbers so I have ordered one too. Fingers crossed I also have a positive outcome!

Tools required for removing the head unit and replacing the screen are torx drivers (non security are fine) T20, T8 and T6. Decent lighting / eyesight are needed when it comes to lifting up the 2 ribbon cable connectors and especially when reconnecting them to the new screen to make sure they are seated correctly before closing the clips. I'd recommend taking photographs as you go so you can remember where all the screws go. Removal of the two SD card bays requires a little bit of force. Be careful not to damage their connectors. I eased that part off first then had to use a little more force to get the bays free of the fascia clips. The two knobs on the front of the radio also require a firm hand and quite a bit of force to remove them. They just pull off to the front. Good luck.20200827_173503.thumb.jpg.3ae90532a62ff8086c96b6a051b508fe.jpg

Following this topic seems to be bad for your Yeti's health!

Until today, my Amunsden2 unit has performed faultlessly.

However, today the satnav image continually increases and then decreases. The audio will not hold a track, jumping at random to another and the radio (on both DAB and FM) refuses to recognise

any of my preset stations and jumps at random between other stations.

A visit to the dealer tomorrow for another 'fix it under warranty, please' discussion

To finish my own topic.....the new screen arrived promptly and I finally got around to fitting it today. Success! All now working perfectly again.

Thanks to much to Jonnyfun for paving the way.

My observations to anyone finding this thread in the future. If yo can get hold of a replacement screen this is a very doable task. I'd put it on a par with changing the battery in your iphone in terms of difficulty.

As Jonny mentioned probably the trickiest bit is disconnecting the SD card readers from the facia plate. I was about to give it a bit of force then noticed the little plastic clips - pressing them in gentle whilst pulling and they all came apart no problem. Also note - the code numbers on my screen and the ones on the replacement were not identical although the screen physically were. All worked well however. Good luck sourcing a screen if this is your issue down the line.

Wish I had found this thread before having my screen replaced.   Couldn't fault the guys at SatNav Systems Ltd.  They diagnosed the problem and did it while I waited.   Still way cheaper than the dealer diagnosis of a new system!

  • 5 months later...

I've been having a similar problem with my 2017 Yeti - when typing in a postcode into the sat nav screen - the 'P' is non-responsive.

There was a previous fault where the screen either didn't turn on - or was non-responsive - so we took it into our local Skoda dealership.

They carried out a check and came back with this...

"Reg. media issue. Found fault in system for mechanical error of media screen. Test plan inconclusive, carried out software config on 5F. Customer to monitor however if issue re occurs the recommend new media unit."

Took the car in today for them to say it will cost £150 to run a full diagnosis - it will then cost either £1,200.00 to replace the head unit - or if it's the control unit - it will cost more like £2,000.00

Obviously not very happy with that, and I see that it's possible to replace the screen - do you have any recommendations about where to buy a replacement screen?

Thank you.

Would be interested as to what the cost on this was .... PilotPete didn't mention it although I'd guess it was significantly less than a Skoda main dealer/Skoda who seem happy to do unit replacement rather than block or component repairs .... in line with most other manufacturers.
