Best panel filters / intake systems for petrol VRS

Featured Replies

Hey,

Sorry if this has been done, but I'm in a bit of a rush. I've booked some time on a rolling road to do some geeky intake testing for my e92 M3, to see if upgraded panel filters / cones really do help for a video, and as I own a VRS I thought I might as well run that too.

I realise videos like this have been done before, but I'd still like to run it, and I'll be going full geek to get pure data.

The running order for the M3 is new OE -> aftermarket panel -> full cone intake system -> no filter at all. I'd like to mirror that with the Skoda to see the difference between NA and turbo engines.

I'm assuming a K&N setup will be the most common fitted one, but I was wondering if anyone had any pro tips as to what this engine likes and doesn't like

Thanks in advance.

I would be giving 'Oiled Filters' a miss, so that would be the K&N.

I had a K&N panel filter in mine for a while, it fitted well and seemed to flow fine. Some people get problems with the MAP sensor because they over-oil the sht out of the filter. Pipercross style foam filter is also good. Full cone intake can get expensive but not much separates the cheap from the expensive as far as flow goes. Any noticeable differences will probably be seen from changing the inlet elbow and the intake hose.

K&N filter lets more dirt... Even on youtube one guy made video about it...

On all my vehicles I've always run K&N filters. Always found them to be easier to maintain. As said above, when people do clean them, they reoil it within an inch of it's life. You only need a light spray across.

I used to use performance filters but not anymore. There is very little difference in flow rates compared to a paper filter.

I had a k&N fitted in my stage 2+ Octy and had a boost fluctuation in the mid range. Put in a standard paper filter and the fluctuation was gone with no loss of performance. If you can get nearly 340bhp from a stage 1 Golf R using the standard intake and panel filter then clearly it flows enough air.
