It would be fair to say that wasn't a huge success.

Although I'm afraid of heights when I was about 24 I thought it was a good idea to throw myself out of a small aircraft which wasn't going to crash anytime soon with just a parachute for company and after counting to five thousand......slowly......a miracle occurred and the parachute did what it was designed to do and slowed my descent from 2,000 feet. Floating down was a beautiful experience and I even remembered to do a nice roll on landing to avoid snapping any bones. Would I do it again? Probably not.

re: jump leads.  Interesting to see the red car's headlights both appear to be still lit.

Reflection of camera flash?

Probably the flash (looking at the further headlight and how the shadows/light drop on the image). 

 

Wondering what the 2nd car was.. a dodge?

It's a left hand drive automatic.

It's familiar. American model of some kind but I can't quite recall which one.

It's a Jeep patriot judging by the wheelarch and front wing

Had plenty of these moments in my old job investigating unregistered vehicles that had become damaged during transportation .....

how do you let things get that far out of control during a jump start???

I'd guess that once the jump-leads lit up no one was brave enough to grab the hot clamps.

This is part of the reason why I always use a portable power-pack. The integrated compressor is useful for tyre checks too.

Could the "Jeep " be a Flambe edition.

But coming from an older generation( where cars couldbe either +/- ve earth)if in doubt of polarities, I'd grab a meter and test both setups to verify polarity ,then connect -ve to-ve ,connect one +ve, then tap a jump lead on to the other +ve. I'd only expect a small ( at worst) spark.

Also from an older generation where -ve earth was just starting to come in as alternators began to replace dynamos (generators)  - you had to be careful that the bumpers didn't touch when connecting vehicles of different polarity - metal bumpers - remember them?

The things that did what was written on the tin.

 

I even fitted a towbar to the bumper of my Escort, it was a proprietary kit with shaped alloy plates to the bumper curvature.
