Second Hand buying red flags - 272 Petrol

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a second hand, but only barely used, Superb. 2019 Model basically.

I have come across a 2019 (pre-FL, beggars can't be choosers) and it meets quite a bit of my checklist.

13.5K Miles, registered March 2019 and is priced on the low side from Wimbeldon Park Honda.

But it has 2 previous owners - which is setting off a little red flag in my lizard brain.

Would it bother you? Or would you be concerned?

That its not a Skoda dealer - would that be a concern in any way.

I have to be a bit more cautious than most as I would be bringing back to Ireland, so any after sales issues wouldn't be easily resolved.

Thoughts?

Just go for a long extended test drive on various types of roads if it has DCC test different modes such as comfort and sport. Check to see if it has a spare wheel, blind spot lights in the mirrors (working). My Sportline Plus has the electric boot which is a nice feature and the 9.2" Columbus info screen. Check the voice control works on the sat nav as well. You might notice a slight lag between putting your foot hard down on the throttle and the gearbox reacting but this is normal for the DSG. Bought mine direct from Skoda dealer one owner ex-Skoda management car for £23,840 in Black Pearl and saved £15,000 and it is the best car I have owned having achieved 49.3mpg (best) with 700 miles possible (with control of the go pedal) from a tank, cheap road tax in the UK (£150) and low insurance for the performance. Mine has now covered 12,700 miles since March 2019 (19 plate) and has been 100% reliable and first service due in December at 17,000 miles and uses very little oil as well.:hi:

Thanks for the info. Test driving will be an issue as well. I would normally go and get it myself (have done in the past a couple of times) But with the whole covid situation it means I would have to quartine on returning to Ireland for 2 weeks. I need to work, and can't work from home. So I'll be using an agency to collect it for me. I wish I could by this type of car here in Ireland, but all they are selling is the 150BHP versions. Can't bring myself to spend my money that way. I need at least the 190.

So its all a bit of a risk etc etc - which I am trying to minimise. I think they are very reliable cars anyway and I'd want to be very unlucky to get a lemon. Hence why Im a little worried about 2 owners on this one already in its young life.

If they could either do a video (ideal) or take a photo from the vehicle long term fuel consumption that will tell you a great deal about how it is driven as at maximum speed it can be as low as 12mpg. When I test drove my car I could see the previous driver who worked for Skoda had averaged 32mph and 32.5mpg and covered 4,900 miles in 6 months which is normally how long they use a car before getting a new one when the 69 plate cars get registered in September 2019. My average speed is much higher at 44mph and overall 39.5mpg actual over the 7,800 miles driven since last December.

If the first 2 reg letters range from KM - KY I think these are the Skoda HQ mgmt cars, it could be a reason why it's had 2 owners. I.e sold on after 6 months. Check if it's stolen recovered, ideally you would test drive it and check the paint/ bodywork for dents etc. 30-32 Mpg is normal  for shortish commutes, probably worse if pure town work. the mileage suggests that it was driven regularly, check if it needs its 1st oil service. It should be under warranty and may be cheaper as it's not at a franchised dealer.

Seen that ad. Iirc it has Canton too.

Check who are the owners , first could be Skoda registered.

See if Honda dealer tells you why it was traded in. Maybe the guy wanted a type r? Also like above, check if stolen etc.

Ask them what the names are in the tax book. Might be demo or management car and then 1 private owner, who either didn’t get on with it or cause of Covid had to sell it on (who knows). Ask for a video walk through and any damage on wheels or dents etc to be pointed out in video, so you have the request set out as proof you asked in an email. Ask about damage or paintwork etc as well. Ideally I’d want it serviced before you get it as well. These extended service intervals are daft. 10k every 12 months is max I’ll run to. Bought mine from the mainland and had it shipped over that way, as wasn’t that well and couldn’t be annoyed travelling. I know I’m in the North, but Johnston transport brought mine over for me and were absolutely fantastic about pick up and delivery etc. I’ve a feeling they come in through the port in Dublin anyway, so might be another option to try for you as well. The warranty will cover you anyway, and any hassle can be run up here to get it looked at, but can’t see why you’d have to. Any Skoda dealer will cover it.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. I'm torn between this and splashing out on a FL model with VC etc. Still 272. But they are about 7K Sterling more expensive than this one. If it was about 5K in the difference I'd prob go for the later model. But 7K makes it a lot harder to justify.

I was kinda hoping someone would make my mind up and tell me to completely avoid this one 😂 But it looks like it could be a viable option.

I could meet in the middle and go for a 190BHP but FL with VC etc. Kinda best of both worlds and prob priced in the middle.

Will be keeping my eyes peeled.

The better lights on the FL or VC or DCC didn't really bother me because the main attraction for me is the huge cabin/boot space and the Golf R running gear (engine/brakes/7 speed DSG and of course 4WD). Priced my basic 2019 model on the Skoda configurator and it comes out at £41,400 now, which leaves loads of cash left over for 99 octane fuel and a stage 1 remap for some fun. Standard on good fuel mine produced 283bhp (Skoda claim 268bhp) and 369nm (Skoda claim 350nm) but with 360bhp and 514nm and the all important 4WD it can hold it's head high with some 400bhp rear wheel drive cars judging by my experience so far.:)

Agree with all of that. My head is really telling me that the bargain is in the pre-FL. My heart would love the little extras though. And I’d just hate 6 months down the road to be wishing I’d gone for the FL. But I guess I’d just look at my bank account to cheer myself up again 😂😂

VC can be retro’d if I really wanted it🤷‍♂️ Plenty to think about. But it’s nice to have the headache 😂

Mine is August 19. So about a month of the FL version. It had every option fitted except the towbar. List was 46k odd. I gave just over 27k for it at 5 months old. It’s an L&K and has the virtual dash fitted anyway. The new lights will be great until they fail outside of warranty and then you’ll wish you didn’t have them. I’ve had my O/S light unit replaced under warranty for a motor fault just after getting the car. Last car we had issues with was a 4yr old CLS Merc. Led lights were giving bother and in the end needed 2 new units fitted. Cost 5.5k for the parts alone. So I think what I’m trying to say in a long winded way (as usual) is don’t hold out for these new matrix yokes as a be all and end all feature. I would hold out if you can for a wee while longer to see what starts to appear with the reg change though.

I wasn't too bothered about the headlights to be honest, more the overall look of the little changes, and the VC and maybe a little easier to sell when it comes to it in 3 or 4 years time. I have been looking for a Sportline for the colours available that arent on the other variants. And none of the pre-FL have VC.

Some of the L&K pre-FL do have the VC though as you say, but very restricted in colour options.

Good point about the cost of fixing problems lights. What is the major difference between the new HL and the pre-FL HL? Is it not just cosmetic?

I'm not sure if my heart or my head is going to win this one.

If your only keeping it for a short while it’s not really a massive concern. The front of the FL model does look smarter IMO with the new led front fogs so if your in any doubt, just wait for one to turn up.
the intelligent lights use an ordinary fitting with motorised units to adjust beam spread away from oncoming traffic. Whereas the newer matrix use a number of LED’s and shut down individually to blank off or shade a certain part of the road to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. The issue we are finding with the newer led systems is that the individual led’s are packing in quite often, resulting in a new headlight unit being required.
Although in my case the adjustment motor quit with the same outcome. So it’s probably a case of swings and roundabouts really.
I hadn’t really thought about colour differences between the models as I always buy silver, and preferred the better spec in the L&K, but again think the sport line looks better.
still deciding whether to black wrap the chrome trim on mine or not, as to me that’s the main visual difference between them that I like.
not sure the Alcantara seat would go well with kids, and how long before it started to bobble and annoy me.

Thanks for the info on the lights. Clears it up.

As regards the other stuff. I very much agree. I prefer the spec of the L&K and I also prefer the seats. But prefer the look of the Sportline, black pack and body colours. But agree about the seats, I'm not overly fussed on the Alcantara. But its growing on me. I think the Sportline also sits a bit lower.

But a 272 L&K would be a sweet little sleeper of a car. I haven't ruled it out.

I wouldn't be particularly worried about 2 owners, check the car runs ok with a test drive and inspect the service history.

Good luck with your purchase!

I'd have a look at this one:

I thought about VC for a good bit too...

When I got mine I was also very torn over DCC or not, and canton was a, well radio 4 sounds great with it :)

Buying today, I'd be happy without VC and without canton. dcc, swmbo insists on puke mode; comfort, but she's getting happier that I'll tap it into spot drive for short stints ;) If I didn't have it, I'd be, ok with the normal ride. It's not like it magically changes the laws of physics, it's a big car and well what goes up, must come down.

The one other feature I got it for was the radar cruise which I use a lot. Even if on an a road with nothing in front.  The next level L&K had the lane control and traffic blah.. which I didn't think I was fussed by... I might be, a little tempted. But I think I prefer the sportline, it is a lower stance yes, by a few mm, maybe 15 iirc, someone can fact check me :)

The smart lights, maybe, if only for the scary roads of scotland, I'm part moth I think I always look at the lights on coming and lose the kerb. Of course all these nice to haves add up; quickly.

I had an ex skoda car a few back and it was fine, a good price iirc.

Sorry, just noticed it was sold elsewhere, honestly I need a new head. Anyhow there are out there ;)

Needs double checking but pretty sure the DCC in any model sits 10mm lower than standard. So a DCC sportline is 5mm higher than a non DCC sportline.

The fabric sportline Seats are brilliant. Wouldn't worry about bobbling as they are designed to be in contact as a seat!

However be aware that the headrest means you can't get a tablet holder round the front seats easily if that is something you'd like for the kids, dog etc..

However Skoda supply a tablet holder for £23 which clips into the rear fold down armrest in the Superb.

Yeah, my son loves it and now refers to the back of the car as the VIP lounge!

I guess less handy if you have 2 kids though.

I saw someone with a piece of cord around the headrest to hold the tablet.  You need a suitable case and a piece of cord that doesn't look carp if wanting to keep it 'fitted'.

I’m sure I’ve  seen a holder that fits on the back of the centre armrest to hold an iPad etc, to facilitate the use of it for both rear passengers.

Ergonomics are poor for that.

OK, I give in. What is VC.

Its OK found it, virtual cockpit
