Upgrade to Lane Assist and Road sign recognition?

Featured Replies

I recently imported a September 2019 L&K 190 Tdi Superb Combi, to Ireland. I'm sure the original advert (no longer available) stated that it had, "lane assist and road sign recognition". The vehicle has ACC and side assist, but lane assist doesn't appear to be there. It does recognise speed limits, but I believe that may be coming from the navigation system, but no other signs show in the display. Reading from these forums and a few other on-line sites, I gather these missing items are software add ons, which can be retrospectively activated, on payment for the programming to be done and for the software rights. Can anyone advise me if this is correct and if it is, can / will Skoda, carry out these upgrades, or whether there are any other companies that carry out these upgrades, please?

The L&K should have lane assist as standard I believe, you just need to activate it in the instrument menu.

Traffic sign recognition is not standard but is easily retrofitted with the right tools. I added it to my L&K using VCDS.

Hello ChrisCH.

I have tried to do this, but no joy. It shows front and side assist, but no, "Lane Assist". It also shows, "Road Sign Recognition", but the only signs so far, have been the speed signs and judging by how incorrect a few have been, due to changes in speed limits, it isn't seeing the speed signs, but is picking up on old navigation data.

As for going down the DIY route, I wouldn't be comfortable with doing this and would, if I can not get my local Skoda dealer to do the job (contacted yesterday by e-mail and now awaiting their reply), I will try other sources in the UK when I am over next, in early 2021 (Covid restrictions allowing).

Thank you for your help and advice.

Eirhead.

Front and side assist will be by radar sensors on the car. Lane assist and traffic recognition will require the camera on the windscreen. Check and see if the camera is visible On the windscreen. With that hardware there it should then be a coding/software solution.

Hello AJAMESR.

Yes, the camera is definitely visible.

Some on here will def be better in the know - but I’m pretty sure activation is possible then. As mentioned earlier, I though it was standard on the L&K.  But so much varies from country to country and year to year.
Is it the Facelift or pre-Facelift? I remember reading somewhere that you need the right Can Gateway or Head Unit - although the Headunit may only be for Virtual Cockpit.
Pretty sure the gateway can be upgraded easy(ish) if it’s the older one you have.
But as I say, others here have more exact details.
Search for a lane assist thread on here somewhere that discussed this before. I think someone gave decent step by step requirements. I think someone even fitted his own camera. So all things are possible.

It has the Columbus head unit and virtual cockpit. I seem to remember that there were some changes to the standard fittings from time to time on the L&K and it may be that, Lane Assist and Road Sign Recognition, were extras on this model, which may not have been added to this demonstrator, although the sales person I spoke with seemed to think that Lane Assist was fitted and couldn't understand why I couldn't set it up in the menu; by this time, I was back in the UK, so it wasn't an option to go back to the dealer and they are some way from where I usually travel to in the UK, between South Wales and Suffolk.

Around 200 L&K’s were built around 2019/20 without the lane assist coding completed. All L&K’s should have it as standard. Skoda aren’t likely to be able to sort this for you (but they should know if yours is one of the affected cars) unless yours isn’t one of these 200 then yes, take it to a dealer and have it processed as a warranty claim but this ideally should have been done right away, before the import. Lane Assist should be able to be programmed in with coding, you’ll have to find someone who will run the coding for you.

Out of all of the functions on my L&K the only one I turned off was lane assist. OK when on a nice section of Motorway with decent white lines, but in roadworks where white lines have been painted over existing white lines or roads where the white lines are faded the steering tries to drag you all over the place.

That rings a bell. I’m sure there is another thread about that here. Didn’t one guy actually reject the car as a result? He was buying it brand new but it arrived without the LA. I’m sure that thread even has the affected Vin numbers if you can find it.
I have calibrated a fair few cars (all makes and models) in our garage after a windscreen has been replaced and many come in with physical cameras present but not activated. So no recal required. But the LD windscreen still needs to be ordered with all the correct brackets on it, which really confuses customers who are telling us they don’t have LD etc. and they think we are trying to pull a fast one. But in reality the physical equipment is there and needs to go back onto the screen.
Seems as if many manufactures actually just fit the hardware on many models as part of the factory process and then If cust wants it, it gets activated 🤷‍♂️

Hi guys, on this topic, I bought a 2nd hand L&K TSI 4x4 280bhp estate with 72K kms on it in Finland. The car had the windscreen with quite a big stone chip and was replaced by the seller (well known and respectable 2nd hand car selling company here in Funland). No dramas with lane assist, ACC, and the lot. The only thing is that the car came so loaded on specs that I lost track of what it had or not and at a later time, when looking and fooling around with the menus, it seems that traffic sign reconigtion is not there, which seems to me strange.

Anyway, fast forward and here it comes the first service, which is going to cost an arm and a leg, as I was relying on the family specialist (my father in law) to detect any potential areas that needed pointing out before partying with our well earned money. Now it seems that no DSG oil change was done, brake fluid changed, and by the looks the Haldex will need also servicing.

When yesterday I went to our local Skoda garage to book the car in (780€ likely if nothing else needs changing), I mentioned the traffic recognition missing and he looked at it. Apparently, that, the compass and something else was left out when the car was configured and he said that it could not be added on now as Skoda makes it so that once a car leaves the factory with the costumer's specs, it is pretty impossible to add it back (at least in respect of official garage's minds).

I have been reading the coding posts and it seems that it is possible to add it in via VCDS. Now, I am not particularly inclined to expend £200 or os on a cable that probably will use for one or two things. Most of the things that can be done are in my car already and I feel nervous to do other that I don't quite know if the result will be benefitial or not. I came accross the OBDeleven and it seems a bit of a fool's proof thing. Yes, it doesn't come with all the versatility of the VCDS, but it can do long codes and I would just need the one for the traffic sign recognition, so my question (at last!) is, is it possible to activate the sign thing with OBDeleven and has anyone done it?.

Also and completely of the subject, why the garage did nt mention anything about the Haldex servicing?. I forgot to tell them, but they didn't mention it, and by the looks of it in other threads, it is somewhat important to have it done if you want to keep the unit sound.

Thanks and sorry for the biblical proportion post.

Forgot to say, it is a June 2016 born model.

Thank you Sasha, this is starting to make sense and thank you everyone for taking the time to answer my question. Hopefully, my local Skoda dealer will contact me tomorrow with some information on whether they can undertake this re-programming, although from what has been mentioned here, it doesn't sound likely, in which case, so much for Skoda's reputation for customer satisfaction. Hopefully, again, I'm premature and wrong in that last condemnation.

Does anyone know of anyone who can carry out this re-programming, preferably, along the corridor from Fishguard, to Suffolk? I can't think of anywhere in Ireland I could take it, other than a Skoda dealer.

You in Cork?  Try the lads in Watergrass Hill. I know they do a lot of ECU work. Might be something they can do. Worth asking.

Hello again, AJAMESSR.

I know where you mean. I tried them a few years back with my previous Superb, when the head unit went US. They couldn't do anything with it. Ended up sending it to a Polish guy in the UK, who sorted out the problem, updated the navigation maps and the firm ware, all for £100.00. Brilliant service. I may try and find his details and see if he could sort it out. I believe he was somewhere in Bedfordshire / Buckinghamshire, so, not too far away from where I will be heading. Thanks for the information.

I’m on Anglesey if that’s any good to you? If yours is one of the affected 200 cars then no promises but I can try it and add anything else that I can.

Hello Sasha.

I do sometimes travel via Anglesey, I like the journey when I take that route to Norfolk, to my brother-in-law; far nicer than the M4 corridor, so I wouldn't rule it out. This is the VIN: TMBKJ7NP2L7007712 In case it's of any use.

Thank you.

I can’t run the VIN myself as I don’t work for Skoda but if you are planning to come my way at some point please let me know and we can sort something out.

Hi Eirhead - You could try and contact VW Audi Workshop in Ipswich (http://www.vwaudiworkshop.com/) when you are next in the area. Friendly and seem to be knowledgeable enough. I have used them a couple of times and will ask them to do an oil change on my DSG over the next couple of months.

Thanks, Eric. That's another one for me to try if I don't get to sorted out here in Ireland. Ipswich is just 40 minutes away from where my son lives.

I have contacted my local Skoda dealer and they have done a VIN check and established that, the vehicle was supplied without "Lane Assist". I am now waiting to find out if they can install the software to establish it. Sounds as though it may be one of the 200 vehicles you mentioned, Sasha.

will also depend which camera you have fitted

3Q0 type should be fine for all features

2Q0 Traffic sign only possible via swap code

Still awaiting a call back from my Skoda dealer, regarding whether or not they can can upgrade my car's system to full "Lane Assist"; I'm beginning to feel as though I've been put on the back burner; they are supposed to be getting back to me about a few extras I wanted to buy. It does make me feel that Skoda have fallen behind on customer care, when compared to ten years back, or is it just me?

A lot depends on which group you go to. Unfortunately, gives "Skoda" a bad name. I would try another Skoda group. I find the smaller groups to be more helpful, like Hortons, All-Electric. Just so I have this clear, you don't see the 2 lanes on your dashboard and when you go press Car>Settings>Driver Assist Features, it isn't there?

Hello mfizz.

I think you are right, regarding which group you go to. Unfortunately, I am 40miles from my nearest dealership and around 70 miles to the next nearest two dealerships. Were it not for this Covid clampdown, I would have been visiting the UK in a weeks time, which has now been put back to late February 2021, providing there's no further increase of the virus.

I have attached two photographs of the dash, showing the screen when the ignition is first switched on and the second showing the Assist System screen. These are all that come up.

On a second note, can anyone explain what the petrol pump symbol on the left of the screen is supposed to depict? I understand the right hand side.

Thank you all, for the help offered, it's greatly appreciated.
