Traffic sign recognition coding and OBDeleven

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, fell like I kidnapped a previous post and wanted to create a new one to get a stright answer. What I wrote in that one was:

I bought a 2nd hand 2016 L&K TSI DSG 4x4 280bhp estate with 72K kms on it in Finland. The car had the windscreen with quite a big stone chip and was replaced by the seller (well known and respectable 2nd hand car selling company here in Funland). No dramas with lane assist, ACC, and the lot, all working fine. The only thing is that the car came so loaded on specs that I lost track of what it had or not and at a later time, when looking and fooling around with the menus, it seems that traffic sign reconigtion is not there, which seems to me strange.

Anyway, fast forward and here it comes the first service, which is going to cost an arm and a leg, as I was relying on the family specialist (my father in law) to detect any potential areas that needed pointing out before partying with our well earned money. Now it seems that no DSG oil change was done, brake fluid changed, and by the looks the Haldex will need also servicing.

When yesterday I went to our local Skoda garage to book the car in (780€ likely if nothing else needs changing), I mentioned the traffic recognition missing and he looked at it. Apparently, that, the compass and something else was left out when the car was configured and he said that it could not be added on now as Skoda makes it so that once a car leaves the factory with the costumer's specs, it is pretty impossible to add it back (at least in respect of official garage's minds).

I have been reading the coding posts and it seems that it is possible to add it in via VCDS. Now, I am not particularly inclined to expend £200 or os on a cable that probably will use for one or two things. Most of the things that can be done are in my car already and I feel too nervous to do other coding that I don't quite know if the result will be benefitial or not. I came accross the OBDeleven and it seems a bit of a fool's proof thing. Yes, it doesn't come with all the versatility of the VCDS, but it can do long codes and I would just need the one for the traffic sign recognition, so my question (at last!) is, is it possible to activate the sign thing with OBDeleven and has anyone done it?.

Also and completely of the subject, why the garage did not mention anything about the Haldex servicing?. I forgot to tell them, but they didn't mention it, and by the looks of it in other threads, it is somewhat important to have it done if you want to keep the unit sound.

Thanks and sorry for the biblical proportion post.

Hi Sasha, thanks for confirming. Have you coded with the OBDeleven?. Is it the same long code than with the VCDS?.

Also, it seems that there is a new version of the the OBDeleven. Looking at it, the main difference is that the new one can be managed through an iPhone as well as Android, but nothing else?. So maybe the "old" one is enough as I have Android and also is cheaper?.

Yeah I use it all the time, coding is done in the same way. I’ve had both versions of the dongle and the older one works really well if you have Android but if you are going to keep it a while, stretch to the new one. Will be supported for longer :)

Actually, you're right. The new dongle is quicker and will support other cars, not only VAG, they say in their FAQs that they are starting with BMW and will add more brands as they strike rights agreements with other companies. It is also kind of reasuring that VW is endorsing them.

The only issue is that the pro version is 99€ with 200 credits on it. If long coding is free, I can't see myself expending the credits any time soon, as most of the other customizable extras are already in the car, but I guess that just the traffic sign recognition is worthy the dongle cost if it really works.

Thanks again Sasha for the advice. I might pick your brains again later after the service when I order the dongle, so I don't mess it up when activating the traffic sign thingy.

Cheers.

Hi both. Sorry to resurrect a thread - I'm doing this too. Did you try it and is there a confirmed long code that will work on a 2018 model? Best

Thanks, Langers. I don't want to be controversial but thinking of using OBDEleven, to try coding with s view to getting a Ross Tec cable. At present I'd be looking for OBDEleven code. I'll get an auto scan but understand stand I have all the modules required. Thank for the reply and very best

The coding will be identical for both VCDS and OBDeleven. The method to access the coding and the descriptions/translations might be different though ;)

There are a few different A5 cameras used through the years so at a bare minimum, it would be helpful to know which you have. I can take a guess but I'd rather not...

Yes, I am also going back to this, which I never looked it back as I was (still are) pondering about what to get, if the VCDS or the OB11.

As Langers has said, the long code will be the same and there is a thread where they put it up.

My Skoda garage here in Finland is looking at it and to give me a price. So if they come back with it, it means it is possible with my 2016 L&K camera.

Sorry to resurrect this thread again, but I've been trying to use my newly purchased OBDEleven Pro Pack to enable Traffic Sign Recognition.

Having watched this video, I attempted to apply the same changes, but both OBD and modules look a little different for me.

'Traffic sign recognition 0x21' (no underscores) is found under 'Vehicle function list BAP'

'Menu display road sign identification' is found under 'Vehicle menu operation'

When long coding, none of the bits are labelled. On updating controller 17, byte 5, bit 2, I get the same 'Dynamic Road Sign Display Error' in the dash, so same coding seems to apply

Finally, on locating controller 5F, byte 24, bit 6, it was already unchecked, despite the fact that I have the display of Nav traffic signs activated.

This makes me wonder if the coding should be different for my model, which is a 2020 iV L&K?

The end result is that no traffic signs are displayed and I when I select the Road Signs in the dash, I get the 'Road Sign Display Error' message.

I'll revert everything to as it was found, but If anybody can offer a fix in the meantime (@SashaGrace?), I'd be grateful.

I think I read that facelift models ie MY20 onwards now have SFD protection, which means modules can only be unlocked by connecting to a factory server.

Edit: obd eleven claim they can circumvent SFD so I don't know

Thanks for the info.

According to OBD,  "OBDeleven can automatically detect that the control unit is locked by SFD protection when the modifications are being tried to perform for Long coding, Adaptations, or One-Click Apps. In this situation, if you try to modify it for the first time, the application will direct you to authorize the SFD unlock procedure where you will be asked to update your personal data*."

I did not receive any such messages throughout, and was able to make all the specified modifications, they just didn't work.

Could be that optional extras not fitted at the factory such as traffic sign recognition are locked down and VAG no longer allow those functions to be enabled for free by a third party.

Best contact OBD eleven for support
