Steer wheel alignment

Featured Replies

My steering wheel looks a bit on the left when driving on straigt line , if i get it for alignment just for a short correction to stand straight  will the column's electronics need reset  (set up to 0) or it will not matter?

Also any other re-seting ?

Just mainly wondering for the AFS functionality and ESP..

Thanks

Are you aware of any damage or work on a particular side that would have affected the steering wheel position?

Usually any side that has been disturbed will be slightly out of alignment.

Knowing my tracking was good previous to replacing parts I just adjust the track rod end to re-centre the steering wheel.

It's kind of counter intuitive at first, if your steering wheel is biased left adjust the relevant wheel to point more left, usually this only takes a turn or two of the track rod end.  It only takes around half an hour and a couple of spanners to adjust-test drive-adjust.

Thanks MicMac, no I'm not aware it has happened  anything to the car not even passing a bad wholes..

Tyre pressures is equal  fine in all wheels.

So I'll live a little with this and inspect the issue for  some weeks and see how to proceed.

My wheel is ever so slightly off centre too.

Non-car people probably wouldn't even notice it's that little.

But the car doesn't pull to the side at all. It's perfectly straight.

So my guess is that alignment has been carried out but the wheel wasn't quite straight.

So although the wheel is turned slightly the wheels are correctly aligned.

An adjustment would be required on both side to straighten the wheel and keep the car tracking straight.

Wheel it was looking  so straight until some weeks now suddenly it  'moved' a bit left.

Can not recall any possible reason why..

Although car drives straight and doesn't pull at any side.

Wonder if my tyres are the cause as the current ones have run for 45k km and have not been swapped fronts with backs..

?

If you are having questions about your tracking/steering wheel alignment and your tyres are good it's easiest to have a garage check it although you can do it at home old-school-style with basic tools if you have time and like that sort of thing, check youtube for examples.

If it suddenly moved a bit left then i'd suggest you've hit a pot hole or similair.  Doubt tyre wear is a cause, on my old Oct 2 wheel was slightly to right when i purchased it (used), seemed to drive fine.  Had 4 new tyres as they needed replacing and wheel still to right.  I was always going to get tracking done but at a different garage ... once tracking had been done wheel was straight.  I did have tracking done on another car previously and the wheel wasnt straight when they set it up so leaving the garage it was at an angle slightly.  Took it straight back and they rectified.

Ok, thanks, just wanted to see if by experience tyre wear could cause wheel's different sitting  angle..

Then it seems needs to be sorted with a tracking alignment.
