Switched fuses for dashcam.

Featured Replies

Hi.

Can anyone help me with a list of switched fuses that I can "piggy back" my dashcam off please. (Octavia 245 RS)

Got a Nextbase 622gw to try and hardwire in.

Do you want switched or none switched.  I ran mine permanently on so that if anything happened whilst i wasnt there that it might pick it up.  I never had issues with battery going flat.  Additionally mine was hidden away behind a piece of vinyl that I applied to the inside of the window so not obvious from outside

I was thinking switched, so it doesn't flatten the battery, however the car gets used most days to/from work 7 miles away, so always live maybe OK.

Also not quite sure on positioning of it. Whether to hide it completely behind the rear view mirror or just below it. 🤔

I've put mine behind passenger side of mirror, so I don't see it from my seat. It is not below or above, but right behind. Plain 70mai camera without screen, controlled by voice, so you don't need to see it. If you have different one, maybe some other setup may be optimal.

What I have noticed is that there are some fuses for Adblue, which is for diesel cars (mine is petrol) so I was wondering if I could utilise one of those and whether they're switched or not.

I seem to recall people using the rear wiper fuse position as well?

Wait a minute, by my understanding how this piggy back works, you connect it only to a positive of a fuse, and mass is going anywhere else, It doesn't matter which fuse you use, as it is not going through it anyway.

What only matters is whether you need persistent +12v or not, so you can use any.

But I'm not sure whether it's best to use a switched one (live when ignition is on) or not.

Also the thing that I plug into the fuse socket has two fuse sockets on it. Do I need to put another fuse in it, in addition to the one that's already there?

Or is that only there in case of different heights within the fuse box?

You put the original fuse from the car's fuse board into the empty slot on the connector.

That's in addition to the one that's already there (As shown in the picture)?

Yes, the one that's in the fuse tap already sits between the 12V and the wire that goes to the dashcam. You need to put the car's fuse in the other side as it sits between the 12V and the other pin that goes into the fuseboard.

So for example if you put it into the rear window wiper slot, if the dashcam blows it's fuse then there is still a fuse to the rear wipers so they can work.

Gotcha. So it's a double fuse. 👍

Hi, Which did you end up using please, I'm going to do mine when (If) the rain stops.

I haven't. Because...

1. I haven't/don't have any time, too busy with work especially when I can get paid min £355‐£440 per extra shift.

2. I haven't got the patience to [censored] around with the stupid glovebox and the dampener, which I've looked for can't seem to find and with a car that has caused me nothing but trouble for the last 7 months, I don't think that I will bother, I'll get a company like Bannings  to do it.

Yeah the glovebox damper thing is a b*tch ----- I had the glovebox out 3 times, the 2nd time I shafted the damper.

Where’s best place to find an earth for the fuse taps?

You won't have to look very far to find one, any bolt going into metal should do the trick. If in doubt just test for continuity with the engine bay.

I used one of the nuts attached to the metal cage for a nice solid contact - it's accessed on the side flap next to the glovebox (just out of shot here but had the pic handy)

I tested the 3 bolts shown above and they are all a good earth if that helps anyone.
