Short USB C cable for dashcam

Featured Replies

Hi. I have an SE Tech on order for delivery next month. Has anybody been able to find a really short USB C to micro USB cable for connecting a dashcam to the rear view mirror? Shortest I’ve found is 30cm which is a bit long.

I have RHD car and prefer the dash cam on the passenger side. 30cm wasn't long enough and 1m is far too long :(

Which dash cams have USB-C ports? Or would you use an adapter?

Hi, they don’t, they have USB micro generally, but the USB in the rear view mirror is USB C, so it’s just a USB Micro to USB C cable needed to connect to the car but I can’t find any really short ones.

Ah ha thanks, of course. So a proprietary USB-C/micro USB lead should work with most common dash cams e.g. Nextbase etc? I’ve not had one before but am tempted, partly because of the handy headlining socket!

I got mine from eBay. Yes it's 30cm but it worked ... just

Is there a lot of cable left with a 30cm cable? I was thinking I needed something like 10cm if I’m putting the dashcam right next to the rear view mirror.

Yep, so in my other car which is USB A I just plug the garmin supplied cable in to a USB socket in the armrest, but that did mean routing the cable in the trim around the windscreen  / down the side of the door etc. Was quite easy, but having somewhere to plug it in right next to where you are putting the camera will be so much easier.

I put mine on the passengers side behind the rear view mirror and 30cm was just enough.

Very slightly off topic but can anyone confirm if the USB port in the mirror is a permanent live or does it go off when the ignition is off.

Just checked mine and it only operates when the ignition is on.

I've got the 30cm and have my camera on the passenger side (UK). The cable fits (and no more)

I have a short one for charging the phone, not sure where it came from but it will no longer work for data transfer & sometimes will not charge either, like most its cables are now fractured.

The OCD in me doesn't want to see a snake or roll of cable on the countertop, all the ones in the shops are 1m or 2m long and no way am I paying 3 times the price for something with 1/4 or 1/8 of the cable so the hunt continues.

30cm cable on Ebay for £3.99 including delivery. Sold as camera cables but note that they can be used for lots of devices.

I tried the 25cm cable but that meant the camera had to go on the offside of the mirror which was a little distracting. I’ve settled on the 30cm cable (which turned out to be 31cm fortunately) which allows the camera to go on the near side and is therefore hidden behind the mirror during driving, which I prefer. The site of the USB port must be set up for LHD really, as you could then use a really short cable and still have it behind the mirror.

Cheers. I picked car up on Thursday and spotted the USB port was on the wrong side for RHD which is a bit of a pain. I’ve ordered a 30cm cable which I was hoping would loop around the edge of the mirror housing but I suspect it will be tight. I’m getting a garmin dashcam mini which I think might sit slightly lower and more central than yours so hopefully will be ok.

Looking around to get a cable myself and I came across this I wonder if this will solve the problem of the 30 cm cable being 'just' about enough. Not sure myself but for the price it might be worth a punt. It is 20cm coiled but will stretch up to 100.

Have a look on Aliexpress or Etsy, both are quite good for finding odd things.

Type carefully though as you maybe offered something quite unusual or unexpected. 😂😳

I don't suppose you have a link to that cable do you? I got a couple that were both stated as 30cm long but they were 25cm so had to go back. Thanks.

Here you go. £3.99 delivered and measured 31 cm. I had to shave a few microns off the mini usb end with a very sharp blade to get it into the slot on my Nextbase, but it was very easy to do.

Hi I'm not very good with these usb leads I have tried all the ones I have none fit could someone please tell me what lead I would require for a nextbase 512g to use for the usb port by the rear view mirror. If someone has the answer and has bought one if they could let me have a link to where they bought it I would appreciate it grateful for any information many thanks

Just realised my USB socket on the rear view mirror isn't a permanent supply. Not much use for my dash cam then as I had mine set to record any motion when parked. Good one Skoda
