mac mini from USA or student discount?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to get a dual core mac mini, they are about

Only issue i can see is warranty and power requirements. I'd go for student discount myself... if only I was one ;)

think it uses an external power supply, so it would be a case of just getting another one. Warranty, hmmm don't think they go wrong do they?

education discounts make it very tasty.

6 months interest free as well at the moment via the online store. some of the resellers are doing 12 months....0%......

double tasty, espeialluy on an education price

no don't go wrong in my experience

The UK power supply is quite expensive on its own, so that will eat into anything you save buying it from the US. I doubt anything will go wrong with it, but if it does you won't have a UK warranty, you could send it to the US, but that's costing you again.

Apple pretty much manage next day delivery, so if you want it sooner rather than later thats another plus for the UK one. Hardware and software wise, it'll be almost identical. You may have to install some English spelling dictionaries, but Apple don't do an International English Localized OS anymore, so you'll be fine with it.

I'm getting mine with student discount sometime this summer. And another iPod. There isn't that much price difference in it if you get the Higher Education (uni) discount.

I'm soooooooooooooooo tempted to upgrade my mini to a dual core version... shame i get next to nothing for my powerpc one though :(

Which one do you have?

I'd be interested at the right price.

PM me if you decide to sell

Me too, dependent on the model. But I'll let Doc Z get first. As I didn't actually ask :(

It's the 1.4Ghz version, with 1Gb RAM, Superdrive and Bluetooth module. Set me back £650 just under a year ago.

Does it have built in Airport?

how much is the uni discount? Thats what i'll be getting! Is the 0% only open to students?

Uni discount depends on what you're buying, when we got our dual 2.5Ghz G5 we managed 30% off. But that was a chunk of cash. You'll get slightly more than the general 'Student Discount' though. Best bet is to check the Apple Store online via a University network. I haven't looked now the new Intel ones have been released. Need to get into the Uni and see.

No, cos I have wired lan access from where it is, so didnt see the need to spend a few pennies on that module.

young boyced is on the case, but as he's doing his masters, and on a friday afternoon I doubt he'll be in!

0% sounds good though, is that a buy now pay in 6 months or monthly payments?

If you're after a Mac mini & don't need to boot MS Windows, then you could look at a refurb'd G4. This could actually work out faster on current software for a lot of people.

Look at Cancom: ( http://refurb.cancomuk.com/products/search.htm?category=01.01.10&show=Refurb ) or on the Apple store: ( Click on Refurb store; bottom RHS of Apple store main page.)

Turn the volume down before switching off?

well, in terms of discount ...

I've just priced mine up (1.66Ghz Core Duo, 1GB Ram, 3 year applecare warranty)

As a retail customer, £799. give or take 20p.

As Education, the same deal cost me £704.

Thats over £90 to take the g/f out or a dirty weekend in...

The education discount makes the 3 year warranty an exellent proposition- something like 50% off that - £58 as opposed to over £100....

- ok it shouldn't go wrong, but given I've had my iPod in twice since last march.......belt and braces....

The 0% for six months is open to anyone from the conversation i had in the Apple store last week. the 12 month deal was a reseller (authorised and authorised repairer too, handy) and was one they were doing themselves, though they where using the same credit company as Apple themselves... go figure.

To turn the POST chime off use Startup Sound from versiontracker.

oh and the mini is classed as a portable so warrenty isnt an issue, trust me i work for apple ;)

You shouldn't have admitted to that......a few words in your ear....

Macbook Pro CPU Whine

Macbook Pro Heat

Macbook Pro Screen Inverter Buzz

PM me if you know anything about these "problems".....official fixes, etc....(other than the Quiet MBP or Mirror widget etc....)

If you are still thinking of the USA route....

I go two or three times a year and have bought loads of stuff.

Most PSU's are multi voltage, you just have to cut the US plug off and wire on an UK one.

As far as warranties, most US shops offer extended warranties.

I have one on my dig. camera. for five years and its multinational. ie if it breaks down in the UK it is still covered. I have already claimed for a new battery, just rang them up and was told to buy one locallay and send the bill to them.

Copied all my mp3's from my pc, is there anyway to copy over the date added/rating/play count from itunes in windows into itunes for mac?

Also I downloaded MSN messenger, installed it and deletd the downloaded file from the desktop. but this also deleted the application... Is that right?
