Difference between oil and inspection Service ?

Featured Replies

I realise this topic has been covered in various degrees, but I cannot find an exact answer. Hopefully one of you clever folks can help ?

My car is reporting its due an oil service in 3000 miles and an inspection service in 4000 (approx). I am on long life  (extended) servicing.

Skoda seem to have changed their service recommendation to 'oil and inspection' every 12 months and an extended scope service every 2 years in addition to the annual 'oil and inspection'    https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/servicing-maintenance-fixed-price

My question is why does my car quote different milage ETA's for what is the same service, and as I am on Extended servicing I assume the above statments on there website do not apply to me (if they do what is the point of an extended servicing if I still need to get it serviced annually).

Finally what should I be doing with my car, I assume just continue to only get it servived when it tells me too ? (My default policy at present)

Thanks Folks for any of your views

The oil service has a maximum time or mileage (whichever comes first).  Depends on style of driving / journey type, so can be less, so can go out of sync

Obviously some people reach time limit first, others reach mileage limit first

Just get one service done, covering both, in 3000 miles

All getting lost in translation.

Confusion caused by VW Group / Skoda, just as they like,  never ever 'Simply Clever' or just Simple with them.

The Oil Service and the Inspection service thing was a nonsense,  there was Minor or Major Services,  then they changed to Interim and Major.

Now it is a Oil & Inspection Service all as one.

Then each 3rd year the Extended Scope over and above.        THen you can be on Fixed Servicing Oil Changes at 372 days / 9,400 miles or Flexible Oil Changes / Servicing at 24 months 18,000-20,000 miles.

Advice please.  I have a 2 year old auto fabia with 4900 miles on clock, which I have had for a year. Dashboard now displaying message "oil service due".  Having searched skoda recommendations and this site I am a bit confused what service I actually need and my local skoda dealer has not been much help.  Not sure if it has had any service at all.

Also do I really need to go to a  skoda dealer or would a vw or I dependant garage be acceptable for what I imagine is a minor service?

Thanks in advance.

@sleepwalker

?

Find out by asking at the dealership what is on the system as already done. ie What if anything was done at 1 year old, or since the car was had a PDI?

Was it serviced last year?

What is the job title of the confused person at the dealership?

The cleaner likely knows better than a salesperson or service desk operative.

The car if on Variable Servicing is due an Oil & Inspection Service if 2 years old.

If on Fixed Servicing and serviced at 1 year old it needs a Oil & Inspection Service and maybe a pollen filter.

Likely not a A/C service or new Brakes because 80% worn, and no Fuel Treatment.

They are not called 'Minor Services' any more by Skoda UK, and @ 2 years was called a 'Major Service' anyway, even if getting the same done as a Minor / Interim 12 month service.

You might well be better going to an Independent VW Specialist and having done what needs doing on such a low mileage car.

If the Oil & Filter has not been changed last year then it needs doing IMO.

Also the car needs inspected underneath.

If any potential issues with the car you need them identified before the Manufacturers Warranty Expires and the MOT at 3 years.

What is with this "National price servicing"  statement - My first oil service was due and locally I was quoted £184  (Birmingham) and then £146 from the supplying dealer reduced to £112 when I questioned that was quoted on their website ( £112 amount now removed)

National Fixed Price Servicing & Maintenance is @ participating dealers.

They can charge less if they want and some will.

?

Are they just doing an Oil & Filter change, an Inspection & free brake check? & Report.

Anything else?

My mate took his car for a service and opted for the "Extended scope" option without knowing what it was.

Big mistake IMO.

Just been looking at the breakdown side of things.  As per this, I thought a new Skoda had 3 years breakdown cover:

But what is this referring to?  Is it after the 3 years are up, get the service done and get free breakdown cover?

Hi DSL,

The small print lower down explains this...

* Full UK and European Roadside Assistance cover for 1 year from day of service. Applicable to all ŠKODA cars with the 3rd-10th service only when booked online.

So we're covered for the first 3 years, but this kicks in after that, as long as you book a service online. (Does this include using the Connect service built-in to the car I wonder?)

Chris

Cheers, I didn’t get that far.

Will worry about that in 26 months.
