Haldex pump failure

Featured Replies

It seems that I have a non- functioning four wheel drive on my Scout, with my OBD scan giving a 16671 code that indicates a Haldex pump failure. I suspect that the fixed gauze filter on the end of the pump is blocked as this doesn't get looked at /cleaned as part of the official service schedule. According to Skoda, as there is no changeable filter on the Haldex 5 pump the service just means an oil change. Has anyone else had a problem such as this?

A look at some of the other VAG fora tells me that this is a common problem on Audis and MK7 VWs.

Hi Stuart, I have seen several references to the Haldex pump filter on this forum - complete with photos of pretty significant blockage. Try a Haldex pump filter search.

The Haldex isnt part of the service schedule.  I brought my Scout at 75K with no reference to it having been done (it had full Skoda history) so as soon as I got it I had the oil done and gauze cleaned.  I took mine to an Audi specialist and when i mentioned the gauze they knew of it and said they did it as part of the change.

From the significant filter blockage I have seen on the photos posted, I am astounded that at least a check on the strainer isn't included in the service schedule.

Yes - get the Haldex system changed every 20-30k.  I recommend getting it done by a VW Specialist (because they generally know what they are doing).  Skoda DO know about the filter; but you have to specifically ask them to change it at the same time as the Haldex fluid change.

If you wanted you can change it and the bolts and 'O' rings, or as the Specialist is likely to do which is clean it.

May not be the pump.. mine did this and the pump was brand new.. long story short and several visits to dealer and it was the clutch plates that had disintegrated. Skoda superb sportline. Replaced controller and pump before they did the plates all under warrantee but now replace oil and clean gauze every 30k

Given that the car was 5 years old and on 39,000 miles a few months back so 2 years past the Recommendation / Guidelines / Schedule for an Oil Change and as we know a filter clean it is a good bet though that can be the issue.

Takes 15 minutes to get an idea.
