Worst suspension in car ownership

Featured Replies

Might not add much to this discussion but - when my left rear damper leaked out all of the oil (might have been like that from the start) I didn't make any notice about it. The car was soft and floating around in the road as I like it to do :) But one thing I rember is what I would call "bump steer", every time I passed a sharp bump it made the car change direction slightly especially when cornering. Reference for Newbie69 - Going south on Essingeleden at tomtebodakurvan there's one expansion joint that made the car bounce a few centimeters sideways.

Drove like this for several tens of thousands of miles without thinking of it, I thought that it was a characteristic of the car. One day I speeded a little bit and drove over a sharp (low) bump on the highway at 160km/h and the car began to throw it self from side to side - this was the moment when I realised that everything wasn't as it should be... Took a look at all four dampers and could clearly see that the rear left damper was covered in oil.

After damper was changed the car behaved a lot better and gone was the dangerous behaviour.

If the car behaves badly it might be something wrong with that specific car, not the design itself.

  • Thanks for info. Was just reading through your detailed guide. Mine is currently completely standard but do have plans for it in the near future.

  • This thread would suggest that the worst thing about this executive sized car is that it is on the same common platform  as the VW Golf.   You can only do so much by varying spring & dam

  • After just 2 days and just over 100 miles driven already prefer the standard ride height with 18" alloys and in my case Continental 235/45R18 tyres. Much more comfortable and less thumping than the 23
