Lane assist is dangerous

Featured Replies

@ayrshiredude

I wonder as well but will not lose sleep over it as they are not in Europe and i will not be driving there.

I know that i can drive the coast road to Culzean castle and to Girvan and the lane assist on my car keeps me right as i do lapse sometime watching the view and it is not intrusive.

I can still dodge the potholes.

I have a Karoq and the lane assist can be turned on or off in that and the car remembers the last setting. Easy to turn on and off as well so I do quite like it on a dark fast dual c’way.

The car can just about follow the lane turning the car through the bends.

There is a jerk if you veer across a lane marking but not enough if you really want to cross it. Nothing at all if you indicate.

It can get confused if the lines vanish or where junctions are though.

Surprised the Kamiq doesn't remember the previous setting

I believe its an EU legal thing.  The karoq was designed a couple of years ago before this came in.  My dads last car, a VW Passat had it and it could be turned of perminantly as well.  Now It can't be perminantly turned off.  You can turn it off but resets when the ignition is turned off/on again.

After years of discussion and consultations it will become mandatory.

That gives the car manufacturers over a year from now to make their systems fit for purpose if it is to be a life saver.

"I was busy on my mobile whatsapping a hilarious youtube link to my mate Dave when the XYZ safety system cut in and definitely prevented me crashing head-on with a car coming the other way. You should have seen the other driver's face, he looked terrified LOL" … "Great safety systems in these cars, innit".

And yet those 'saves' might outnumber the false triggers by 100-1 for all we know.

Aw its marvelous init, it tells you how to drive, what gear to use, what not to do,gives you tips, Tells you to 'Take over steering' when it thinks you may be busy at something else.  I mean where else would you get it ?  Ah ! yes of course,  its preparing the way for the 'Driverless car '

You have hit the nail on the head and to my chagrin it seems the majority of new car purchasers are willingly buying into the bull**** judging by the way the content of this forum has drastically changed over the last year or 18 months.

It seems that many people are more interested in their social media than driving and would willingly let the car drive for them if it never disturbed them.

Agreed.  You only have to look at the way the majority of new model cars are advertised.  Far more emphasis is placed upon luxury features and gadgets than on anything associated with the performance of the vehicle.

It's also true of used vehicles.  I see countless ads that say 2.0 TDI with no mention of which power output.

Advertising stopped informing about the vehicle decades ago, since then it has all been about lifestyle & aspirational "think how cool you will be if you owned one of these" etc, I am incandescent with rage whenever I see the advert with the youngsters driving around impossibly free of traffic city streets sending text messages to each other using the infotainment, I think it was for the Vauxhall Corsa.

Now as you say its all about the (flawed) tech.

Driving as an art and for pleasure is a no-no in these eco aware times. The most strident eco warriors won’t be happy until private cars are outlawed and we use bicycles and foot for journeys and public transport for longer journeys. That maybe fine if you live in an urban environment but those of us who live in country areas need a private car to survive, of course, that won’t matter because we should car share or car pool.

Freedoms gradually but surely being eroded on the altar of eco, zero carbon beliefs and big brother telling you what you can and can’t do.

Now in my 70’s I realise I lived in the free times and driving was fun. Sadly no more and the country will be the worse for it.

Wondering if it can be turned off via OBD software like Carista or OBD11?  Not got mine yet so can't try it.

I just wanted to add to this post.  I have a 2020 Skoda Scala and I made a coding change to enable the previous setting of lane assist to be remembered.  I also coded my Friends 2021 Passat in a similar way.  Quite happy to share details if people are interested.

Someone kindly posted here on how to do it, the Passat was slightly different:

Seat Cupra forum

One positive outcome of reading car forums both here and Pistonheads, is that I have come to the realisation that new cars are way too much hassle and unreliable and too techie for my liking. My 2016 Octavia hasn't cruise/ACC or front sensors or lane assist or touchscreen heating and is all the better for it!

I have had both Kamiq and Scala courtesy cars and neither have felt as good as my Octavia. Several times I have had the lane assist trying to pull me into the hedge, and once slammed on the brakes for no reason.

Turn it off then    It should be able to be done in the ASSIST menu in the dash if you have the virtual cockpit.

Can do it in my Tiguan and the Kamiq

I think @threadbear means that a potentially dangerous interference like this should never have been installed or enabled.

Rubbish   he needs to set it to late and it wont worry him. I have it in two cars and quite like it. Yes its a trifle annoying but it does say its primarily for use on motorways and cuts out at a high enough speed it shouldnt worry you in roadworks as in our country we have a 40KPH limit in them.

It can also be turned off in the assist menu in a virtual cockpit.  As I found out on getting my Tiguan back from having a wheel alignment and camera reset and I just let it do its thing on the motorway and suddenly realised it wasnt going around a sweeping corner that it usually does on its own. Seems they turned it off when in the workshop.

'Driver assistance' settings are per journey. I always switch both off before I set off from home but almost always forget on the rerturn journey until it's too late and I'm reminded by the 'naughty child' pulling at the steering wheel.

What    I set the Kamiq up   when we got it and the settings are constant. My Tiguan is the same  I set it up two years ago and the ASSIST settings never alter unless you go into the menu and physically untick each one. Same with ACC it sits there engaged with the icon on the dash so as the assist systems work and only sets when I tell it to..  Alter the settings for the steering assist to light then and you will hardly notice it .

Obviously if it is constantly pulling you into line you arent steering very straight. I get more annoyed with it telling me to"take over steering" than lane assist pulling me into line.

Big hint; in the UK the speed limit in roadworks tends to be somewhere between 50 and 80kph. Also. if I'm wandering to the edge of my lane it's a warning that I should take a break now.

If a day comes along and you rear end someone or worse hit a person then think I should have left front assist on

If @KenONeillwas right and only those that should be taking a break are drifting across roads and lanes and having a loss of concentration then there are lots of tired or exhausted drivers about.

Or actually lots that really let their vehicle wander, maybe they are talking on a phone or to people in the car.

Many just start off from their home or work or the shops or what ever and can not manage to place their vehicle in a lane or their side of the road.

Not what I said; I said that wandering is an indication to me that I should take a break.

@KenONeill have you driven cars with Lane Keep Assist yet?

You might wander off line more than you have ever realised?

No.

But are we counting deliberately unsignalled (because there is no-one to signal to) turns, and maybe a bit of straight lining as "wandering off line", because I don't but apparently "Lane Enforce Assist" does.

I signal when there is no one to see it because i still do look around, mirror, look behind and around and move.

If there is no one to see then there is no one to be annoyed.

Those that do not see bikes or other vehicles, maybe in their blind spot  should maybe do like wise.

Here are the screenshots of my MMI settings and the ASSIST menu in the AID and  the normal way we have the AID set up when driving

All are adjustable as you can see.. In OBD ELEVEN there are apps for the following

Auto Lock on Exit

Lane Assist setting memory

Hill Start assist

Hill Start Assist settings

There are also quite a few others which if you buy one you will find them

I very glad Im not a roadworker in UK then as 40kph is considered the upper limit here and sometimes thats too much.

We do have long straight roads though, like this one and some very big truck rigs like this

and this is fun at times
