Wastegate Rattle

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Looking for some help if possible!

I have a Mk3 Octavia pre FL (2017) that has quite a metallic rattle at about 1800rpm and at light load. Took it to my independent VAG garage who said the wastegate actuator rod was loose and showed me when it was up on the lift. Took it to Skoda dealership who also confirmed wastegate rattle on a test drive.

They called Skoda Australia and the technical department said it was 'normal' and if it didn't throw any codes then the car is deemed serviceable. Can the rattle get progressively worse and lead to codes or failures?

I've read it is quite common on VWs and Audis and that a clip is sometimes used but the Skoda dealership said they aren't the same engines and not applicable. They also charged me $125 AUD for them to inspect and call Skoda.

Are there technical bulletins relating to this for Skoda vehicles or am I wasting my time and breath?

Any help or info is greatly appreciated!

Hi Tim, sounds to me that Skoda Australia might be telling porkies - my understanding is that the engines are actually the same across VAG (as long as the engine code matches) Does your VRS have an engine ID code (4 letters) on the label in the trunk?

Hi,

That was my understanding. I also think they are being lazy and testing to see if I’ll push the issue.

Engine code is CHHB.

Thanks!

I'm convinced that Skoda Australia is being evasive at best! A google search tells me that the EA888, CHHB engine is actually a Audi design! - and is fitted right across the VAG range. Apparently two versions - CHHA (DCT only) and CHHB (M6 or DCT)

Yep agreed! Try telling that to a Škoda dealer person who is denying it to your face... not easy.

Now to try and fix the rattle...

Print out an official page from VAG engine spec sheet and slap it on the franchise-managers desk.

That’s the culprit!

.I think it's possibly a mutual mis understanding of what each other is saying.

There was a clip available for the gen 2 ea888 as in mk2 Oct Fl, golf gti mk6, audi q5 et al.

But the actuator design is different I believe. For one thing the gen 3 uses an electro mechanical mechanism where as the gen 2 was vacuum.

Is the car under warranty? If not, is probably put up with it unless it is so sloppy it indicates a failure

Ps. I own a gen 2 and installed the clip within a few weeks of buying the car used at 34k miles. So I know the annoyance of the sound.

Gen 3 IHI IS20

The gen 3 actuator coupling to the wastegate arm looks much chunkier.

Thanks for the photos.

The car is under warranty which is part of the problem... Skoda Australia has advised its normal. Dealer wasn’t interested in pushing the issue. Therefore, it’s up to me to deal with

I know the MK2 had it as a known problem but not so common on the MK3. That is the concerning part, is it a sign of something worse?

I doubt it is a sign of something worse. BUT i haven't inspected the vehicle so it is not a very sound assessment. The best placed person to comment may be the independent garage.

Thoughts: If it is only the linkage to the actuator arm ok, still not great as a unique feature of a car with warranty that you've paid for them to diagnose.  If however, it was say the wastegate arm movement and bushing worn then that would be a problem.  How may km has the vehicle travelled apart from the trip from C.R. to mainland Australia in a container?  I expect it may be the former issue, rather than the latter. none the less annoying though.

Independent garage diagnosed as rattle and advised to take to Skoda dealership for warranty claim.

Dealership said it’s normal from having a phone conversation with Skoda technical.

I highly doubt any inspection of bushings was undertaken.

Car has 77 000 Kms on it.

Waiting to hear back from Skoda Australia as I complained and made a bit of noise.

Unsure of what, if any issues can come from it. Dealership basically said until you get engine codes nothing will be done.
