Car written off - Insurance Co Want To Cancel Policy After 30 Days. Expert help please

Featured Replies

Hi hope everyone’s keeping well. Our Octy Scout has unfortunately been written off following a nasty bump. Fortunately no injuries. The insurance company have offered a very good settlement figure, which we have accepted. If we don’t get another car within 30 days they intend to cancel the policy. This may be difficult due to the rapidly changing Crisis.

Just wondering if the insurance company cancelling would cause problems for us in the future? If we don’t manage to get a replacement in time would it better for us to cancel the policy.

Thanks, Mark

Is this LV? I had the same issue. (Not sure if 30 or 60 days)

Buried somewhere in the small print.

Was a double whammy as I'd just renewed for a full year, 2 weeks in advance of renewal date, renewal ran from Oct 1st, however accident happened 28th Sept. Was told when officially written off a few days later I had 30 days to get a replacement car on the policy or it cancels automatically and I lose the whole years premium, no refund for unused period is possible where a car is written off even though the accident happened in the previous period of insurance.

In the end, I moved one of our other cars onto the policy.

Was very annoyed, and I will be reading the all small print in the future.

To cap it off, during the 30 days (no replacement was in place) they sent a demand for another £40 saying the accident had increased the renewal premium which I already had paid weeks before !!! If I didn't pay, I would lose everything including any future settlement.

Hi thanks for your reply im with SAGA, I suspect most insurance companies have a similar clause. Very annoying, the Scout was such a good car it will be hard to replace.

If you can't find a good replacement might be worth getting a 'smoker' just to keep the policy live?

In the distant past Direct line simply suspended my policy, and even gave a refund for the period the paid up insurance was suspended subject to a minimum of six weeks iirc. Actually suspended it for several months and got a couple of hundred pounds refunded.

Would need to check if this is still the case.
