Ordered New Octavia VRS iV - Help with options?

Featured Replies

Afternoon everyone and Merry Xmas!!!!!

I have just ordered the new Octavia VRS iV and I have been racking my brains with any options that I should have. I only have until Monday to decide at the latest as Skoda already have the order and the dealer said I need to be quick if I do want anything adding.

What are the must haves that people would suggest? I was thinking heads up display and Canton sound system but I have heard on the new Octavia the Canton isn't really worth it? thoughts?

Also, The rest of the options aren't massively clear and they read a little confusing ie one page it says you get electric adjustable seats and then the next page says not available on the VRS so good knows what it will arrive with lol.

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Keith

HUD is just a gimmick. Why don’t you sit in a VRS and listen to the stereo with a variety of iTunes before deciding upon upgrading? If it doesn’t come with ACC and dimmining door mirrors I think those are good choices. Heated screen and steering wheel have been great for the last 8 weeks.

Personally didn’t think the canton was worth the extra money/time for delivery as I got a vrs that had already been built and the standard system is actually quite good.

VRS is really well specced out as standard, only option I opted for was spare wheel.

Yeah HUD is defo a gimmick.

I was going to for the heated screen/steering wheel but decided against it, because its the iV I can heat/cool the car remotely and set it up to do it automatically on specific times and days so didn't see the point in getting those options in the end as I will never need to de frost the car.

Comes with ACC and dimming mirrors etc.

Parsey,

Yeah a few people have said its not worth the upgrade anymore for the Canton so don't think I will bother after all.

Cheers.

You’ll get the 3 stage  heated wheel as standard. My last car was a Ford which had the heated screen, I would never personally have it again as the elements for me became very visible in strong sunlight and I hated the sight of it

Ah right, Skoda has really confused me with their options list on the website but that's a bonus if it comes with it then.

Overall are you happy with yours?

Yes very. Only annoyance is having to turn stop/start and lane assist off every time start the thing but once Vcds catches up they will be turned off permanently.  The lane assist is in my opinion dangerous

Im driving a 2020 Mercedes CLA at the moment and it has seriously tried to kill a number of cyclists with the lane assist, not joking when I try to go around then it literally throws the car back over to the nearside

I also have to turn that off every time I get in the car so at least that is one thing I am already used to.

It's totally transparent with VAG cars.

@Kenfold

You are supposed to give the cyclist a 1.5 meter of  space so indicate you are passing them and the lane assist will allow the pass safely.

  • Author

Yep, but when there is no one to indicate to I don't need to use the indicators hence why its tried to kill a few cyclists  :D:D

Some cyclists have mirrors, or hear cars coming and look see if they are going to pass,

and if no one is there to see you indicate to then nobody to bother by indicating.

Lane assist will be on all new type approved cars, as well as other supposed safety systems.

That is how the EU has legislated.

Dealers are clueless as was told basically the same as Ford ....

Basically it is, they are heated screens.

But then if you can not see the difference between a heated one and a non heated screen how would they know any difference.

Now we all know that's not true. If lane assist throws the car anywhere then you're obviously not in control of the car. With lane assist all you'll feel is a slight resistance when you go near the road markings. If you were in control of the steering wheel, the car would travel over those road markings without any difficulty whatsoever.

Anyway back to  the original question.

You don't say hatch or estate. According to the configurator a rear wiper on the hatch is a no cost option so I'd 100% have a rear wiper.  I'm stuggling to think why anyone wouldn't want one or why Skoda have excluded it.

Canton is a difficult one. Normally I'd say no brainer but as the IV doesn't have a spare wheel then when the literature says it comes with a subwoofer in the boot? I'd check if that were true in the case of the hybrid. If there is no sub then do hybrid owners pay same price for Canton as owners with a spare wheel?  It's all so confusing to me.

Of course Canton is more than just bass, it gives you a certain controlability over the sound. I have no experience of the new Octavia but the Mk3 Octavia was one of the worst systems I've heard for quality of sound. And if you prefer it, with Canton you can have dolby prologic deal try to deal with the sound imaging i.e. you can have it enhance the stereo effect. I'd want to try it in a hybrid but if I couldn;t and had to make a decision, personally I'd just go ahead and order it.

There's something else that confuses me - Blind Spot detection. At £510, Blind Sport is rather expensive but if it meant that you also gain rear-traffic alert, then I'd tick the box without question. IMO rear-traffic alert is better than any other safety feature. I can't believe it's not standard on all vehicles. I'd have to check with dealer / Skoda to make sure Blind Spot comes with rear-traffic before ordering it.

Nearly every commentator I read doesn't use park assist. It'd be the first option I'd pick on my car but that's my personal preference.

I do agree that the options list is way more confusing than it should be. Even the standard equipment doesn’t seem to be consistent from car to car...

I have an Octavia hatch SEL on order and I have gone for the HUD but now wondering whether I should have tried it on a Skoda myself. I’ve driven the latest Z4 with a HUD and I loved it. I found myself looking away from the road a lot less. I do think it’s probably only worthwhile if you also get travel assist as that gets you the traffic sign recognition. That does make it nearly an extra grand though.

I do wonder whether the SEAT method of having more trims but few to no options is a better way of doing things? I suppose Skoda are still not like Jaguar Land Rover where the option lists are obscene!

That can't happen with stop/start as VAG have removed the ability to disable it from their firmware - because of emissions reasons and Dieselgate means they can't be seen to be allowing anything that will increase emissions.

Start stop is one reason (not the only one) I detest the DSG and always drive manual. Complete control over when my car cuts out thank you!

I’m told it can be done by basically changing the battery voltage value so that the system never activates, I.e the stop start system always thinks a fully charged and normal voltage battery is below the threshold to allow stop start to work

Why do people hat stop start so much?

I have it on the swift and it's no issue at all...   It works well and smoothly using a separate belt driven motor generator.

Is it the basic starter motor based system on the Octavia that people hate?

Nope, on the Merc if you try and cross the line it pulls the car back over with a fight and it doesn't just vibrate the wheel like every other car I have had with lane assist which includes Octavia VRS and Superb Sportline.

Sorry I did forget to mention that I had gone for the estate, for the Canton subwoofer I thought it filled one of the spaces on the left of the boot above the carpet rather than under it????? Im sure it was there on my old VRS/Superb? Anyone able to confirm?????

Cheers.

Yeah its something that has never bothered me personally so I would never even think to turn it off.

That WAS true until 2018/2019 models when VAG  deleted the software that looked at that voltage value (and also deleted the other hack that changed a temperature threshold).

So the simple fact is you CANNOT disable start/stop with software tweaks anymore, the only methods are to disconnect the battery current monitor from the sense wire on the battery negative or (where the start/stop switch is a physical switch) by adding a third party memory module.
